You can get an app radio, and then your gps will be as up to date as your smart phone is, pluss there are plenty of free or really cheap gpa apps you can use. You can also get dash command and things like that.

What happens though if you're in an area that doesn't have cell service like a lot of areas here out west ?

We came from NC to AZ and never had a problem took I-20 ti I-10 west. It came with a gps antenna too. Different gps apps are different I guess. we have one called Waze that was $10 and another called Motion X that was maybe $25, both work well.
I've owned Pioneer units for years and they've worked wonderfully, the only reason I've gotten rid of a Pioneer system is to up-grade to newer technology. I wouldn't think of buying anything else but Pioneer. As far as Kenwood goes, I've heard of a number of bad reviews such as the one stated above. I don't know if you Pioneer guys realize it but you can now get the latest map up-date for the newer Pioneers via a new service which you can find here: http://www.navigation.com/is-bin/INT...rce=PIO-NAVCOM
i run the pioneer AVH-P1400DVD and its been great. it doesn't have blutooth or nav, but is upgradable if i want to down the road (which i don't have a need for pesonally, so it was silly for me to spend the money on it). controls my iDevices on the screen. lets me set up the button color to match the truck. works with the $10 backup camera i bought on amazon. and only set me back $280. my only complaint is the USB is on the front panel, instead of the back.. just not as clean, not a deal breaker for me.
i've run pioneer head units for the last 15 years, have no intentions of changing that anytime soon.
EDIT: the updated version of mine is even cheaper:
I personally like Alpine best but they are a bit spendy. I currently have a pioneer in my truck and I like it, but I only bought it because Alpine no longer made a head unit like my old one (which was old when I replaced it). I'm not real fond of Kenwoods as the one I have sitting on my shelf had cd skipping problesm which I have never has with any of my other units.
