Hey Bill, How thick is that spacer that you made? Is it solid steel?

The spacer is not solid, it is a length of 1'' x 2" box section (1/8" wall) with the ends welded closed and "crush tubes" (is that the correct term?) welded in where the mounting bolts pass thru.
