hitch/bumper question

i have a 1978 F-250 camper special that is currently set up to haul a 30ft 5th wheel. hauls it like a champ. however, we are planning on changing to a 28 foot cargo trailer that we are going to convert to a travel trailer/toy hauler. my question is this: it has a big solid steel chromed step bumper on the back, and a hitch receiver bolted to the underside of it. i know it was used to haul a boat by a previous owner, but i don't know how big that boat was. what kind of hauling capacity is this hitch/bumper likely to have, or how can i find out?

this is the only picture i have of it currently. i can get a better picture tomorrow.

That seems almost impossible to say. I would be safe and install a frame mounted trailer hitch.

You need a receiver under the bumper attached to the frame.

What you are interested in will have a higher tongue weight. That bumper will pull down against that much tongue wt.

hitch/bumper question

Those bolt ons are usually rated at 350/3500. I thought about using one like that on my truck, but just went ahead and got the full sized frame mounted hitch. You can get a class IV (4) receiver that will be good for 10,000lbs. That will be enough for any bumper pull camper. Especially if you opt into a weight distributing hitch.
