Help!!!!!!

Hi all, Want to see if anyone can tell me what I can do to improve my fuel mileage. Right now I think I'm averaging 8 miles to the gallon. It does seem like the truck runs a little cold. The needle hangs out around the N in Normal. If I get on the throttle it falls down to the cold mark. Is it possibly a sensor that is causing the poor fuel mileage? The truck has about 320,000 miles on the original motor and tranny. It is lifted on 33" tires. If I can get just a few more miles per gallon, then I would be happy. I know that the truck is running rich. I can smell it. Please let me know what you think. Thanks for your help.

Why do you need so many threads for the same question

I'll tell you one thing, the lift and the 33s sure aren't helping.

Oh and just making one thread is more than plenty =)

I think I figured out what happened. I tried putting the post up from an app on my iPhone. It kept giving me an error saying that there was a thread that already had that title. Turns out now that it was wrong.

Sorry everyone.

Same problem with the app on my phone. "Duplicate post" error. I deleted the app, downloaded again and so far works OK.

Did you check your codes yet? If not, you should. You also didn't tell us what kind of truck, engine, trans, and gear ratio you have--that would give some indication of just how poor your fuel economy is.

As mentioned, the 33s are going to kill mileage. If your speedo isn't corrected for the larger tires, your calculations will be incorrect as well.

Your calculations might be off due to not adjusting your speedo, plus anytime you add a lift and bigger tires you should expect to sacrifice for looks. I agree run codes. I just picked up a OBDI code reader on ebay for less than $20 bucks shipped in the original package with plastic still on it. The one all the people on this site suggested is the Equus 3145.

It would help us help you if we knew what truck we were dealing with here (year, model, engine, trans, etc.).

It's a 1993 F-150 4x4 with a 5.0 motor. Not sure on tranny or gear ratio.

I also forgot that the bigger tires would throw off my calculations. so that means I'm getting even worse mileage than I think I'm getting. FML

What have you tried so far? Such as a tune up?, Replacing the O2 sensors?, Good fuel system cleaner? Its hard to give info to help if you dont give the info needed to try to help. Just saying.

Buy a code reader they are less than $20 bucks shipped to your door in a day or two. OBDI will store soft codes and could help. I wouldn't suggest paying money on sensors or a tune up until you diagnose the system.

Alright Evan, please do this.

Find this:

Pop the hood, its right in front of the drivers seat. On the inside of the fender, right near the brake fluid reservoir. They might be hiding under a cover that says DIAGNOSTIC PORT.

Connect it this way:

Just use a piece of scrap wire or even a paper clip.

Grab a piece of paper, or what I like to do is put my phone into video camera mode and film it. Hop in the drivers seat, turn the key to run but don't start your truck. Watch the check engine light, it will start flashing. Record all of this, your codes will be 3 digits in length. (ie: flash flash flash PAUSE flash flash PAUSE flash LONGER PAUSE, code 321)

Then come back here with the results and we'll have you fixed in no time. If you need more help just ask me.

Help us help you, because every time I get an email that this thread got a reply I want to throw my phone into a river

And you have it backwards, bigger tires mean the truck is going further then the mileage states.
