Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if a 2005 5.4L will run with the cams timed 180 degrees out? I am in the middle of doing a timing set change in mine and things don't seem to add up. It's obvious someone was in there before, but there was a lot of wear on the timing cover and on the crank sensor ring. looked at the phasers before removing and the timing was sitting backwards, right to left. I drove it into the shop, ran smooth for a 308000km engine, except for the cam phaser noise. I am understanding the right side of the engine is the passenger side. I think I know what I am doing, but if anyone has any insight, it would be helpful. Installed the new chains, tensioners, guides to the way I think it should be, that meant rotating the cams to match the crank, (dimple on crank at 6 oclock and matching marks on chain to phasers). Thanks

Thanks Ojai, very good video, but its for a pre-cam phaser 5.4l. There is some useful information there though. Got my truck running anyways, rotated my cams to time it properly, buttoned it all up, changed the oil and filter, topped up any fluids that leaked out, got the engine running like a top. Ran really good, no ticking, knocking, or vibrating. Purred like a kitten idling around town, took it out on the highway and had to get towed home. Something let go in the bottom end, I think...

let us know what you find, and lots of pictures please. and a youtube search will most likely find whatever you need.
Tandamad , I'm not sure what you mean by pre-cam , but if you go to the end of the 12 minute video, it has links to all phases of the 5.4 complete with a build thread.
Thank you Ojai, not sure what the plan is for my truck, soon as it died, I started cracking beers... but I have done alot of research on this job. At this point, I've put enough time and money into this truck, might be time to trade up anyways.

Sounds like you need to get the pan off and access the damage.
