5.4 3V timing help

Okay folks, doing a timing belt, phaser job. I got the job in pieces delivered to me. bucket of bolts and new parts. Well the person who attempted it first pulled the cams off, was going to change the rollers and lifters, ( at least he marked them so I could put them back in there orginal spot. However now how do I time the thing. I have read some post that say if you put the bottom timing gear timing mark at 6 oclock , you just line up the single dark chain and the double marked chain link will go over the top phaser mark. So my question is do I just throw the cam back on bolt it down and try to move the cam by hand? seems like there a little tougher than that. But if I line it up like I explained is that how I know my cam is back in the right position. Seems a little strange as I know the crank has been moved without the chains on will that throw everything off.. HELP!

So it sounds like you have to do a complete timing job. Remove all the plugs so the crank will be easier to turn. Install the lash adjusters but leave the rockers out. Go ahead and set your cams in place and torque them down and you can install the new phasers now too. Place the crank with the keyway at the 6 o'clock position. This should put #1 cylinder at TDC. I check this by putting a long 1/4" extension in the #1 spark plug hole and watch as I rotate the crank. It gives a visual of when #1 is at TDC (when this occurs the crank keyway should be at the 6 o'clock position). This is a great video to watch and to reference on timing the engine:

While you are in there you may want to consider replacing the oil pump too. Also go with steel chain tensioners instead of the plastic ones that fail constantly. After your timing is complete then you can install the roller rockers. By leaving the rockers out until the end enables you to spin the cams to position them on the timing chains without moving the valves and potentially having the cam spin and ruin you timing.
