Weird transmission problems with my 92 F150
Weird transmission problems with my 92 F150
I have a 1992 F150 with a 302 engine and a 3 speed with overdrive gear, I think its like an E04D or something like that? It has the electric button to switch the overdrive on and off.
Anyways I haven't driven it much the past 4 months but I've been having a consistent problem since then. At certain RPM's in each gear the entire truck will shake. It's only from a range from like 2500 rpm to 3000 rpm maybe. It's not very noticeable in 1st and 2nd because it goes through those rpms quicker when accelerating, but it is very noticeable when cruising in third and fourth gear at certain speeds and then will stop when I accelerate beyond that. I think it shakes around 35-40 mph in third gear and like 50-55 in fourth gear and then once I get beyond that it will stop.
The other problem that I have been experiencing just recently is that it is starting to slip a lot (I think that is the correct term). Like I will be in 2nd gear accelerating and the engine will increase rpm noticeably and but won't accelerate any faster. I've noticed this on the interstate as well. Like I will just here the engine rpm increase but it not go any faster. I've noticed that when cruise control is on and the engine rpm will be a lot higher but it will still be going the same speed.
I'm thinking worse case is the torque convertor is going out. But I am trying to eliminate all the other possible causes before that. Could these symptoms be the result of low transmission fluid or it just needing to be changed? I just drove it and let it warm up and left it idling while checking the fluid and it was a bit low. But that is strange to me because I have owned it for 3 years and the fluid has always been good up until now. I have done a full tune up within 3000 miles, new spark plugs, wires, the whole 9 yards. I do know however that if there is an engine problem or misfire or something wrong with the engine it can cause the transmission to act up.
Anybody have similar problems and have any ideas?

This should get you started.....Fuel Injection Technical Library » How To Run a Self-Test
Or if that seems to be too much trouble you can pick up one of these at most parts stores or here....
