I was hauling my loaded horse trailer (total weight probably 7,000lbs), with the truck in my sig, last night on a flat stretch of highway. I had it in tow/haul and was cruising along fine about 2,800 rpm so i set the cruise control at 65 and it worked fine for a mile or so and then all of a sudden it downshifted and the rpm's jumped to 5,000+ and the CEL flashed for about 10sec or so and never came on again. I couldn't see any reason for it to downshift, this is the middle of Kansas, it was perfectly flat. Anyway, I turned the cruise off and made it the last few miles fine, got home and scanned it for codes and nothing was set. Drove it (unloaded) this morning and it drives fine. What happened? I know some people say not to tow w/ cruise, but this was a perfectly flat stretch of ground, I was just letting the tranny do it's thing. Am I being paranoid or is something wrong?
Check your transmission fluid level. Also, when was the last time your transmission was serviced (flushed)?
My truck is similar to yours except that I have 4.10 gears. At 70 MPH, I'm turning around 2,100 RPM's. At 65 MPH, if your transmission was turning 2,800 RPM's, then your transmission was not in 5th gear (over-drive). It must have been in 4th gear and close to the threashold for 3rd gear, which is why it dropped a gear and the RPM's raised to 5,000.

Fluid was full but it is due for a flush.
Ahh, hadn't thought about it being on the verge of a gear shift anyway, thanks that makes sense. Any idea about the CEL flashing though? I know that means a misfire, but it hasn't come back on since and no code, that I can read w/ a SGII anyway, was set.
