Question Motor condition

I just bought a F-150 parts truck with a 460 engine. Whats the best way of asertaining motor condition with out taking it completely apart.

I want to put the engine in a F-350, don't want to get it installed and find out it's a completely wrecked.

Motor condition

Start it up and look for Blue smoke.

Do a compression test.

Take the valve covers off and check the valve seals

Look for Oil leaks.

Motor condition

I can't start the engine where it is, too many parts missing. I am going to do a compression test.

Would the starter turn it fast enough to check the oil pressure?

where abouts in AB?, as for the oil pressure, I not too sure about it spinning fast enough to properly register

The starter will not get it for oil pressure. without it warmed up oil pressure is only relative not accurate

Thumbs up Motor condition

Thanks for the advice , I think I may be able to start it, I'll have to jury rig some wiring, and some sort of fuel line.

Whats the bare minimum of wire needed just to start it, can I run a wire from plus battery post to + side of coil?

Well a good way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

yes, but don't run it too long or you will burn out a factory coil.
If you havea coil that normally runs on 12v that would be great.

If you can crank it at least 15 revs you should get at least 10 psi

oil pressure actuated switches operate at a slightly lower pressure reading.
