Fuel Guage Accuracy

I have a 1 month old, 2003 V10 4x4. I have noticed that my fuel guage does not seem to read out as correctly as I would think it should.

What I am finding is that the guage drops from "full" to 3/4 tank after only about 70 miles. Thinking my fuel consumption was horrible, I filled the tank up and discovered that it only took a few gallons and I actually was getting about 11MPG. After traveling about 175 miles, I will have dropped to 1/2 tank (70 miles first 1/4 tank, 105 miles second 1/4 tank). It appears that I am going to be able to go 350 miles before dropping to 1/4 tank. So the guage drops quickly when full, and gets progressively better to the point of too much as the tank gets lower. So the float readout seems very skewed. Considering the X has a 44 Gal gas tank, I was thinking that I should be seeing around 100 miles for every 1/4 tank.

Again, this is not a MPG issue because the fill-ups seem true to the actual milege. It is more of how the guage reads.

Is this typical with other owners? If not, it this a defective float issue or is there a computer adjustment that the service shop can make to force the signals from the float to the guage be a bit more accurate?

In my case, ignition was not on or in the accessory position. Key was always out of the vehicle. The X was filled up normally.

My gauge (V10 4x4) goes the other direction. It takes almost 100 miles before the needle clears the full mark. Then the low-fuel light comes on when the gauge reads about 1/8-tank remaining (it took right at 40 gallons to fill).
