I decided to go for the clearance \ cab lights on my 2002 Black Limited.
Just called my local dealer and it will cost me $153 for everything! What a deal! I read the old post about 5-10 hours and they had to buy the $50 light and harness.
Can you elaborate on what the dealer will do? I assume they'll mount and wire the cab lights? Is this a "standard" service offering...that is, do they have the templates to cut the roof to get the lights lined up correctly?
I've been interested in doing this but hesitant to go cutting holes in the roof. If I knew I could get it done at the dealer that cheap, I'd do it in a second!
I just got mine done 4 hours ago for $215.00, thought I got a deal. At $153.00 with fac. parts, thats a deal. The guy did mine in just under 2hrs, nice clean job.
I've been toying around with the idea of clearance lights, but I want them integral to a windshield-visor. The Lund and other aftermarket types haven't impressed me much. Don't get me wrong ... I had an unlighted Lund visor on an old F350 ... no complaints. But the aftermarket lighted visors leave a little to be desired as far as the lights themselves go. Ford DOES offer a lighted visor that comes on the F350 Lariat LE. However, the list price for the visor assembly and mounting gasket (you DO NEED this gasket if going this route) is almost $1,200! Fortunately, my "buddy" behind the parts counter at the local Ford dealer can get me the parts for about $700. I'm still mulling it over ... but I'll probably drop some bucks on one ... mostly because it's a real nice looking unit.
The downside? This visor does not have the flow-through (under the visor) arrangement. The air must flow around the outer edges.
Well. I guess that is what i get for not doing the work myself. I picked up my truck last Tuesday. The dealer put aftermarket pieces of crap on my truck for cab lights!
It looked really bad. I was furious! I was very clear of what I wanted....I even pulled the service guy out on the lot to show him a new F250 with the factory lights and explained the spacing, the lights, etc.
Well the "Installer" decided that the factory lights leak, so (without even a phone call to me or the service guy) he cut 5 holes in my roof the size of a half dollar and put a set of "doo-ray" cab lights. I looked that the ford design, and they would have sealed beautifully. ($5 ea cost, btw)
I had the service manager by the nads before I left. I even took off one of the lights to show him how bad the install was. Ruined my roof and there was no way these would not leak!
They agreed to remove them, weld the holes from underneath and make my truck like new again. I told them I didn't want them to even try to put the factory ones on.
So much for cab lights through the roof for me....I knew $153 sounded to good to be true....I think I'm going to do the "Lund" visor with lights or possibly the factory one (which no one can seem to find the part number on, even thought it is in the brouchere.
The part numbers from the Ford factory service manual (available from www.helminc.com) are 3604118 for the lighted-visor assembly and 36500A16 for the gasket.
Got my truck back yesterday from the dealer bodyshop. All the holes are gone obviously and it looks as good as new. It is amazing what they can do...
Bad way to go about getting a free detail. I hope to see your pictures when you get them up.
What I think would look very nice is if the cab lights were Clear\Translucent with yellow bulbs. This is what I have on my clear corners and it looks very nice.
Their are companies out their that sell clear clearance lights , that have amber colored L.E.D's in them. Alittle too "Import" for me , but they are bright .....
Thanks for the info...I may have to go to the web and check it out...but I was thinking about ones like Ford has....just clear with Ambler LED's. On my all black Ltd X it would look better than the amber.
I would love to see how the Factory lights look as soon as the pictures are posted. I think the factory visor has to be removed if you (or when you) replace your windshield. That would be a pain.
