Rust hole in frame. Weldable?

Good ol' reliable 88' f-150 rust belt special. Yesterday i was hammering the rust off of the frame preparing to put a wood bed on this thing, when i came across this hole right in the middle of where the leaf spring bracket connects to the frame. After snapping this picture, i continued hammering and scrapingand wire brushing the rest of this rust off, and im happy to report that the rest of the frame is pretty solid. Turns out there was a hole in the old bed right about where this rust was and water would constantly drip. Not good.

MY father in-law is a welder, and plans to take a look at this in a week or two, but i wanted the opinion of the forum. Please keep in mind that once its welded i plan to convert the rust and repaint.

Remove all the rust that you possibly can and see how much base metal is left.

If you leave any rust in the weld zone it will cause defects.

If the remaining steel is too thin, it will only melt off during the welding process, you may need to use some patch metal if this is the case.

i would replace the spring hangers while i was at it. they are a lot easyer to get at with the bed removed .

SCRAP IT

LET ALONE weld patch on frame and you drive down road it going snap in half on other spot of RUSTY frame.

Until it stay off road then just patch with steel plate but still it isn't safe to drive anymore.

first off, descale it and clean it good. then spray the whole area with phosphoric acid.
once treated and dry, weld a plate over the hole on both sides.
finish it up with another spray of phosphoric acid, and once it is dry prime and paint.

Like some others have said. REALLY chip away at the frame with a pick hammer. Don't tap on it, HIT IT. You will not damage GOOD frame, yo will damage a BAD frame and that is the point. You want to find what is BAD.

I had a parts frame like yours,(rusted in the same spot) I scrapped it, was not worth repairing it once I for all the scale off and saw how bad it REALLY was

My frame is def not that bad. I had some free time and finished the scraping and hammering. It's only that bad because of the hole in the bed that was above it.

i had one at the body shop last month that the only thing left was the two inch wide top rail. the 6 inch drop of the frame and the two inch wide lower flat was completely gone.
since it was a lot plow truck that was not going to ever be put back on the road, i just welded a chunk of angle iron on what was left of the frame, welded the spring perch to the angle iron, and then welded a rear crossmember on the back.
