97 explorer question

what is the lever above the ignition barrel? it doesn't seam to have a purpose.

also... how can i fix my ignition barrel? my key is pretty worn and i can start my truck without my key... and even when i use my key... i can take the key out while truck is running. i dont like this one bit.... how can i fix it? do i have to replace the key and barrel?

Yes, you have to replace the key and barrel. I replaced mine recently. A new one was about $25 at my neighborhood parts store.

That lever allows you to turn the key to LOCK. Without pressing the lever you should only be able to turn it to OFF, not lock, and not remove the key. It is only on manual trans vehicles, automatics do that with the shift handle. You can only turn an automatic to LOCK and remove the key when it is in park.
