Gear Selector Question

Picked up a 2011 F150 Friday night and really like it but I have a question about the gear shift...

I've got the floor shifter and have PRNDM21. Why 2 and 1 when everything can be done in M and D with gear lockouts?

What am I missing?

because if you have a truck without the "select shift" (read: towing package) your read out is:
PRND321

so they replaced the 3 with an M and left the rest alone.

i'm thinking it probably doesn't go much deeper than that.

you are right, though. you could easily just have PRNDM so long as you have select shift.

Since we are on the topic of select shift. I notice something about my 2013, EcoBoost that is different than my '11, 5.0 I traded in.

I find in my EcoBoost mostly when in town, sometimes the gear readout, is not exactly what gear the truck is in, anyone else notice this? Example, will be driving through town, get up to 50-60 mph or so.

Then see traffic approaching, slightly back off throttle and feel the truck downshift from 6th to 5th, yet the indicator is still showing 6th.

Have had it happen on the highway, hit a hill causing a downshift , can feel it, but readout still says 6th. Have also noticed in the lower gears too, but more frequent when the truck was in 6th.

Makes sense. Probably keeps production costs down since they will use the same lever and such.

I wonder if it's correct but you are feeling the torque converter unlocking? I know in my Taurus with the Ecoboost it will attempt to stay in the highest gear possible for the longest amount of time (I swear it will lug the engine). I've noticed the F150 has the same tendencies under light throttle and unloaded. I've always thought of it as part of the Ecoboost to maybe keep the turbos spun up?

In manual mode I think the converter is almost always locked do you don't get the same shift feeling.

i've watched the tach in my 2010 while braking and it does use the transmission to downshift to help you slow down.

unlike the days of yore, the converter will stay locked when you let off the gas, so i doubt what he is feeling is the converter.

the PCM will also cut the fuel to the engine to help you slow down and save gas, which can feel like a downshift, so that is a possibility as well.

easy way to tell is when it feels like it downshifts, but the indicator does not change, drop it down a gear and see if you feel it shift. if it shifts when you drop it down, then what you felt wasn't a shift. but if it doesn't shift when you drop it down manually, then your indicator is lying, as you suspect.
