'01 5.4 X4wd Engine mount removal problems?

I have an 01 extended 4WD 5.4.

In the course of preparing it for trip towing trailer from Florida to Oregon, I deemed it necessary to change engine mounts, as, during a test tow locally, discovered that under load the engine would shift enough to have fan contact shroud (it overheated).

I took it to local shop of a well known mechanic-and 5 days, over a thousand dollars in labor-they have not yet been successful in replacing them (and trans mount). Book calls for 5 or six hours...they've even removed the intake.

I do not at all believe that the shop is trying to have me buy him new bass boat-but he seems to believe my year truck is wrong as far manual goes. Google and forum search has yielded me NOTHING relating to engine mount removal problems-so I am hesitant to accept his rationale (and pay double the labor for their education). Someone care to educate me here?

Thanks in advance!

Another thing to check, if you haven't, is the cross member that the radiator sits in could be rusted through too. Just a thought, more of issue in the northern climates.

Don't see why the engine and tranny mount should be a problem....might have to have a temporary body lift on to give you more room to work.

Odd that the engine mounts are bad...heard of the tranny mount going south before just not the engine mounts....unless its been wrecked previously. Any pictures?

It had an oil leak on passenger side, which apparently softened the rubber. Pushing a 7000 lb trailer in reverse-or serious pedal while 4 wheeling in reverse caused a rather loud thunk as engine torqued over. Chose to replace drivers side as well, as thats usually first to go.

No major accident history (was involved in a glancing L front/sideswipe blow when another vehicle cut off previous user. Essentially a "pit" maneuver-which spun, flipped, and totaled the other car, a Toyota.) No body damage incurred to truck, no lights broken, grille intact ( plastic valance below torn off was extent of damage).

No pics (difficult to even see up in there!), no rust of concern-although truck did spend a couple years in Philly
I'm wonderin' if I'd a been better off doing this on a buddies driveway, with just floor jack, cherry picker and a trans jack/cradle. Not too happy-tomorrow will be one week. Never known this mechanic to have this much trouble.

Does 4WD add some sort of complication to removing engine mounts on this vintage of truck?

I looked at my early 1997 shop manual, 4.6L, the 5.4L was not out yet.

They didn't ID whether 2WD or 4WD, but the procedure was pretty simple:

Remove engine fan and shroud.
To remove LH mount, loosen mount to frame (through bolt) on the RH side.
Support engine (looks like a board crosswise across oil pan, with jack under it).
Remove LH mount to frame bracket bolt, lift engine and unbolt the 3 bolts holding the mount to the block.

Procedure for the RH side is the same, but loosen LH mount to frame bracket bolt first, and remove starter motor before removing RH mount.

At least for a 2WD it makes sense, I can easily see the mounts by just looking through the wheel wells, over the top of the tire.
