I have a strange vibration in my truck, happens in overdrive between 1200-1700 rpm. I can only feel it under throttle, goes away as soon as you let off the gas or get above 1700 rpm. Any ideas?
Sounds like the slip joint (I think that's what it's called) in your drive shaft. I had the same issue and replacing that joint in the drive shaft fixed it.
If it goes away when you're off the throttle, it's drive line related. Could be slip joint, but more likely will be u-joints or center carrier bearing (or both). Could also be that one of the weights on the drive shaft slung off, but that seems to be much less common than the center bearing.
Get underneath the truck and push up on the drive shaft near the center carrier bearing. If you see more than about 1/16" movement, you should replace your bearing. With a 4-inch lift, you should also shim your center bearing. I believe the rule of thumb is 1/8" shim per inch of lift. The shim kits are available at the dealer, or you can just get some 1/8" flat bar stock and make your own.
Changed the carrier bearing and pulled the slip yoke boot and greased it. That took care of my vibration. I think it was the slip yoke mostly, had to tap it with a hammer to get it to move.
