Chasing a Vacuum Leak
I've been chasing a vacuum leak on my 460 for over a year. I've changed lines, vacuum caps, rebuilt the Edelbrock carburetor (twice), and sprayed several cans of carb cleaner all over my carb and intake trying to find it. The engine idled fine, but at part-throttle you could hear a whistle and the engine would surge a bit. Still pulled good, but it was very irritating and I knew if it went on long enough I'd end up burning a valve.
I was reading a post in a forum, either in the straight 6 section here or at Ford Six Power about a guy that had a similar problem and it turned out to be his vacuum advance diaphragm. I unhooked mine and went for a short drive. Sure enough, no whistle or surge. I replaced the diaphragm yesterday and today I hauled a sixteen foot gooseneck with four cows in it to auction. That ol' Crew runs like a spotted...ape now. Plus, I recently side-gapped my plugs and I could feel a difference from that, too.
Hope this helps somebody else who's been banging their head against a wall trying to find a leak.

All joking aside, thats great news! Im in the process of removing anything and everything under the hood of all my Dents that isnt necessary, wires, hoses, factory jacks, emissions junk etc. My goal is to have everything really simple and easy to diagnose and work on. Nothing more frustrating than those phantom problems where you look at everything yet cant find the problem. Luckily, these forums give us a great amount of expertise that others have learned through trial and error.
