Maybe Ford's opinion is that their base models are extra luxurious even without the frills....

XL used to mean something special, now it's just a couple of fancy letters.

There was and XLT Lariat package from the early 80s, (maybe even as soon as the lat 70s) up thru the 90s. I had an 87 1/2ton XLT Lariat. You couldn't get the Lariat package without the XLT pacakge too.

I have a 1991 XLT Lariat. I am not sure what makes it so special.

You can see it in my gallery

XL is a rather new designation. I believe XLT did mean extra luxury truck when it started being used. At that time the base level truck was a Custom. I also remember seeing XLT Lariat trucks. I think in the beginning the Lariat was a special XLT trim package (sort of like FX4 is a special option package for a 4x4 in 2003).
