They sometimes have a cheap plastic mount bracket and the best place IMO to mount it is right under the seat by the seat adjustment handle. NOT BEHIND THE SEAT.
The plastic thing will break you will work on it and it will fall out again then you will put it behind the seat or in the tool box. Or the metal mount lock lever will vibrate loose and it will wind up behind the seat. FAIL
Get some large pieces of self adhesive velcro and make it a quick draw set up under the seat edge.
And at least get one with a gauge to keep tabs on its condition, nothing is worse than pulling the pin and getting nothing.....
Sorry to see that. If you were closer, I'd say tow it to the shop and we'll get after it. I have a fire extinguisher in the monster truck, but it looks like the other two will be getting one as well.
Its why i add a battery disconnect switch, or marine style battery terminals with wing nuts......If you can cut 12V power in a hurry, you just might have the chance to only have melted wires, rather than open flames.......Sorry to hear of your fire, glad it stayed away from fuel system parts!
I appreciate all the comments guys. I don't have the skills to put this truck back together myself. I'm gonna sulk a few more days and then decide which direction I want to go. My initial thought is to get what I can get for it and then put my dollars in another truck that's more manageable for my limited skillset. Tinkering is fun but rebuilding is above my paygrade. This is my only truck so even if I could put it back together I have to have a truck like yesterday.
Yeah, if time is a factor thats a BIG issue........Depending on what else is good or bad about the truck, maybe you can find a fellow FTE member nearby that needs to buy a parts truck, you might do better than selling it to scrapper......For that matter, quite a few of the folks here are "fleet" owners, maybe you can trade this truck for another one? If its got a good bed, if its got certain other options or equipment, some one may NEED this truck just as much as you need a running, driving one........Food for thought, and good luck!
Man that really sucks. Sorry that you had to go through this. A year or two ago I mounted a fire extinguisher in my truck. It came out of a dump truck. I just screwed the mount into the kick panel on the passenger side. Seems like a good place for it. Easy access yet out of the way. Just an idea for anyone thinking of adding one in their truck.
So you have a bare cab that needs paint, weatherstrip, carpet and six hours worth of swapping a harness and dash from the junk yard. A lot of my projects get the bare treatment no matter what, usually with a few tools and not a fire.
I too had a fire extinguisher mounted in my '74 F-250.
You have now reminded me I ought to keep one in every vehicle I own as a precaution.
My truck did backfire through the carburetor a couple times, which scared the hell out of me.
I am very sorry for your loss, thank the lord you are alright.
You can replace a truck, you can't replace a life.
I had the same thing happen to my pickup about 2 weeks ago. Luckily I was just pulling into the yard when the smoke really started pouring out and the embers were blowing out the heater duct. What I found was the heater bo plentum) was full of leaves and crap from the PO parking under trees in his back yard for 20 years. The blower motor resistor must have come into contact with them and started the contents of the heater box on fire. I luckily got the plentum pulled out and cleaned out in time to save everything. Since I had it apart I went ahead and replaced the heater core and blower motor since I was having issues with both. I had been meaning on pulling the plentum out and cleaning all of the junk out since I bought the pickup but never took the time to do it and I almost had the same fate you did.
Might be a good piece of info for a new owner to pull it out and clean all of the accumulated junk out of the plentum.

Man talk about a close call. Glad to hear you caught it in the knick of time.

Same thing happened to me about a month ago....as soon as the smoke started pretty heavy I pulled over and disconnected the battery until it went out. Pulled out the resistor for the fan and cleaned out the burnt leaves. A very close call for sure...would have been embarrassing since I am a fire chief also. Dr.... I am very sorry for your loss and hope things work out for the best for you.
Since I don't have the knowledge/skill/time to rebuild, I'm gonna try to sell this truck to raise money to help purchase another one. If anyone's interested I posted it in the for sale section.
