300I new engine parts? I wanna get new manifolds exhust and intake but what two bolt up right or am i gonna need a custom washer set of some type? And ignition setup any reccomendations or certian to stay away from? Everything was smog setup and AIR pump is shot. Along with soleinods pipes. eliminate or keep? Same for computer layout sensors and misc. are in need of replacement. Some input on specifics would help also. thank you greatly - brad
The exhust manifolds bad. will a aftermarket work with original intake manifold? Also would like more power. and better mpgs. I've been reading about ozzys and jegs sells a kit with both manifolds.
If your 85 is like mine, it has EGR, EVAP, SMOG (AIR) Pump and computer control with the TFI ignition. I simplified mine quite a bit and got rid of the AIR pump and computer. Replaced feed back carburetor with Carter YFA and distributor with HEI. No more computer. EVAP and EGR now vacuum switch controlled instead of computer.
In terms of exhaust, there are options out there for dual exhaust, headers, all sorts. I didn't mess with that, although I do plan on replacing my down-pipe since I got rid of the air pump.
Kscop what are the steps in doing that and a parts list. i want some more power and mpgs
maybe heeders, carb, cam, cam gears, springs, push rods ,rockers. There lots of possibilites i just dont know what combination is best.

I read your how to, good stuff its what i been looking for now its all together on one site. So my AIR pump is bad and I'm not buying a new one. First question is on your setup in the how to didn't you remove erg valve? And on here you said its now vac. operated? What intake manifold are you using? My exhaust manifolds in rough shape, will this setup work well with the hedman headers? Also down the road or now i was thinking about Crane cams and push rod set. along with springs, lifters, and retainers. Will everything still work together? Head studs head work done?
I did remove the EGR. It was bad and on the 85 it's a back pressure type valve. I decided to put it back, so got an EGR valve for a 1980. I ran a T connection from the ported vaccum switch output (that goes to the EVAP valve control) and ran off that T to the EGR Valve. Since it's ported vacuum and goes through the switch, the EGR will only operated when the engine is warm, above idle and below wide open throttle. Just as it did with the computer control.
I'm using the stock intake manifold and EGR spacer. The EGR on my setup has a pipe coming from the exhaust manifold, so I would think headers would mean no EGR. If you put on headers, you'll have to remove the EGR tube and plug the opening in the EGR plate. Same plug as used to plug the AIR hole in the EGR plate. You'll still need the plate (Spacer) since the PCV valve feeds into it.
In terms of a new cam, etc. that shouldn't cause any issues.
On my truck; I pulled the AIR pump and plugged the hole in the EGR plate. I crimped the old line that went to the exhaust, but I plan to replace the down pipe. My setup now is pretty simple:
Carter YFA w/ electric assist choke and heat tube from exhaust manifold
DUI Distributor with Live Wire plug wires, autolite platinum plugs gapped at .50
Ignition relay to provide full alternator voltage to distributor
Original air cleaner and PCV
Replaced old coolant temp sender that was used by the computer with a ported switch
Replaced old EVAP top with ported vacuum valve
Ported Vacuum to ported switch. Output of ported switch via T connection to EVAP purge control and new EGR Valve
Bowl vent, via thermal valve, to EVAP input
Tank vent to EVAP input
PCV smaller line, via restrictor, to EVAP Purge
Ported vacuum to distributor
manifold vacuum to brake booster
larger PCV valve hose to port on EGR spacer plate
AIR Pump removed with EGR plate hole plugged and exhaust line crimped
Way more room under the hood and looks cleaner now.
You have to love the old 300 six to spend a bunch of money on it for a little bit more power. That's ok, but there is a realistic limit. When you reach that it's time for a v8.
