93 Explorer A/C broken?
I have a 93 Explorer Sport, 6cyl 4x4, and it seems the a/c just died on me today... The problem starts when I push the a/c button on, and turn the **** to the right (on). The a/c does nothing but blow warm air from outside (feels like)... It has worked fine for the last couple of years I've had it, but why all of a sudden?
Here are some symptoms of what's going on:
- In the morning, when it's cooler oustide, it seems to work ok when I'm driving to work. (20 min ride)
- While the a/c is on and blowing warm air (during the day), the rpm gauge fluxuates like it's trying to come on about once every 4-5 seconds', but I don't think it is really working... I remember when the a/c used to work properly, when the vehicle is just idling, the rpm's raised about 1-200 rpms- almost to 900 rpm's from idling at 750 or so.
- is this an electrical problem? Freon problem? Compressor problem?
- Could this be fixed without the help of an expensive a/c shop?
IF SPINNING:
Buy the A/C recharge kit w/ guage from your local parts store. Get the one that has the components seperated in the see through plastic packaging, the fittings should be all brass. Costs about $ 25. Follow the instructions to determine if you have any refrigerant left in your system. You should have 25-44 psi when the compressor is running, should increase to about 80- 100 psi fairly quickly when the compressor stops.
If the compressor runs only 4-5 seconds at a time, more than likely you have a leak and are out of refrigerant. If the pressure checks out, check the AC pressure switch.
Your compressor should run a couple minutes at a time to constantly with a proper charge. If the system pressure goes into the red zone on the guage (compressor running) get 2 cans of combo R134a and 2oz. ester oil or 2 cans r134a and 2 cans (4 oz.) ester oil for AC systems. If completey empty you have a leak.(check the condenser in front of your radiator, good place to start)
You may also replace one can of refrigerant with a can of combo refrigerant and stopleak, this may work for you.

First, check that your compressor clutch is working. Open hood and watch that the front of the compressor is spinning. If not, Look for bad wire connection to the clutch, (unplug and plug back in), else the clutch is bad and needs replaced.

The lower tube (aluminium) that goes from the evaporator core to the radiator is halfway supported by a steel bracket to the acumulator.
Since steel and aluminium don't get along, the tube will get corroded and leak.
Hard to see, we found out after adding some fluor which lights up under an ultraviolet lamp.
Good luck, Tony
