A/C Problem!!!
I have a 93 Explorer Sport, 6cyl 4x4, and it seems the a/c just died on me today... The problem starts when I push the a/c button on, and turn the **** to the right (on). The a/c does nothing but blow warm air from outside (feels like)... It has worked fine for the last couple of years I've had it, but why all of a sudden?
Here are some symptoms of what's going on:
- In the morning, when it's cooler oustide, it seems to work ok when I'm driving to work. (20 min ride)
- While the a/c is on and blowing warm air (during the day), the rpm gauge fluxuates like it's trying to come on about once every 4-5 seconds', but I don't think it is really working... I remember when the a/c used to work properly, when the vehicle is just idling, the rpm's raised about 1-200 rpms- almost to 900 rpm's from idling at 750 or so.
- is this an electrical problem? Freon problem? Compressor problem?
- Could this be fixed without the help of an expensive a/c shop?
If your rpms keep fluctuating, it sounds like the compressor is continuously cycling the clutch. This could be a bad pressure switch or most likely low on Freon.
I agree, it sounds like it's low on freon. If it's leaking you should be able to see an oily type residue around a fitting or the compressor. If you have to replace the compressor, and if you are still using R12, you might to consider converting to 134.
