Hi All, My wife's 99 Ranger's heater fan is not working. It was working off and on until now. The fuse is fine. I went out this morning and tested the blower motor for power in --had voltage. Assuming the motor was bad, I pulled it. Before wasting $ and a trip to town, I bench tested it --it works. Now my question: what do I do next?
Sounds like a failing motor. Sometimes banging on them will make them work again for a short time. (pulling it out could be enough movement to do that) I had one that I would have to tap gently with a hammer to get it started. It was too cold outside to change it and too cold to not have one. Made it through the cold part of the winter doing that.
You could put the blower motor resistor on your suspect list too. It's right next to the blower motor in the engine bay. That ended up being mine's problem, although the fan would still work for me on the high setting. It's cheap/easy to change if that is the problem.
You could take the motor apart and check the brushes. If gentle thumping with a 2X4 wakes it up, the brushes may be sticking, or worn so much they don't make good contact with the armature. With the price of the replacement being low, it is likely not worth fiddling with the old one, and if the resistor block checks out, I'd just replace the old with new.
Be careful about the polarity of the wiring. The blower squirrel cage will run backwards if you reverse the leads. The replacement I used had black & white wires to take the place of two distinctly other colored wires. I had to connect the new wires to the old factory connector.
