Physically, a C4 will bolt to a 300 I6, 351W, or 302. The flexplate ("flywheel" for an automatic) has a different imbalance between the 300 I6 and the others. So you will need a 351W specific flexplate. (ask NAPA or some other part store for one)
If you are talking about a 351M, then it gets more involved.
Thanks for the response havi, Im looking to get a c4 but from a 6 cylinder, Ive looked at other threads stating that a c4 from a 6 has less amount of clutches.....
I went to a U-Pull-It junk yard i saw at least a dozen c4 transmissions, four of them from 6 cylinder cars, ranging from 61-66, Without electronics connetd to them
the others from big vic's to Linc's ranging from maybe from 78 to 88....so i get under the car and i see wire harness of the rear of the tranny! Which actually scares me. Im just looking for a simple c4 without the electronic hub bub.
Should those wires scare me? Is it something I could delete? More important Why are they there?
Careful you don't mistake a C4 with an FMX or Fordomatic. You will want a C4 made after 1965. Any wires on a newer C4 are merely for the reverse lights and/or neutral safety switch.
As far as clutches inside, if you pull one from a junkyard, it would make sense to have it gone through anyway.
Im pretty sure i was only looking at c4's...knowing that it has a 11 bolt pan......like you said its coming from a junk yard i am gonna give a look through.... i just dont want to go through the hassle of removing a tranny from a car/engine that has the right external parts but the wrong internal.
So on the safe side c4's between 65'-79' is ok? Or 70'-79'? Because I have read that after the 70's ford beefed up the c4 with better parts and fixed flaw designs......
I guess the internet forums could be a curse or a godsend......
If I am not mistaken the change was actually shift pattern. Prior to 68 (?) when you put a C4 in LOW you are actually are in second. Like Havi said 65 and newer. I think I read that the 250 6 has the same bellhousing as the small block....
ok so the years dont really twist me anymore.....its the internals. Are the internals different on a c4 from a 6 cylinder? I really havent seen rebuild kits asking if it is a 6 cylinder C4 or a SB C4.......Im confused

the main difference between the pre-70 c4's and the newer ones is the valve body. they totally revised the valve body and shift pattern between these years. the internals (on the newer c4's) are for the most part all the same no matter what engine it came behind (that being said it should be noted that some applications used better internals then other applications such as truck or hi-performance cars). Ford made many revisions in component design over the years and even in the case design (ie pan filled vs case filled is but one) and in the input shaft spline count. so try to get the newest tranny you can and prefereblly from a truck or large car as they usually had more clutches in them then the smaller cars. there is also the C5 which is a C4 but with a lockup converter in it.
do a google search on C4 trannys as there is lots of variations over the years of this transmission and lots of sites can give you better info on what to look for and what to avoid.
