2 Newbie Questions

I have 1983 F100 Flareside and have two questions. Will start simple to hard:

I have ordered two different sets of side mirrors and both are two wide to use the existing holes in the door. Really don't want for drill holes if I don't have two. The F100 mirrors I picked up are all about 2 inches too wide.

Now the hard one. The pre pious owner had removed the bed. So I had two put new tail lights. Have struggled for about a month. Front lights work fine. Back I can only get the driver side blinked. Nothing on the passenger side. The ground was checked - nothing I could find. When I put the right flasher on the driver's side rear flasher will also flash.

Any help would be appreciated.

Your post is hard to follow and understand...

Are you saying you have different flashers for each side?

The solid brown runs the parking lamps (on all 4 corners), license plate illumination, cab-mounted roof markers if equipped, etc. These are a separate filament in the two-filament bulbs.

The RH stop & turn lamp is orange/light-blue-stripe... does that filament light up when the brake pedal is pushed? It should....

Sorry for the confusion. Here is what I have done.

The new left rear tail light only the flasher works. The wires coming from the truck are brown, black, and green. The replacement tail light assembly has a red, white, and brown wire. I have no working lights on the back of the truck other than the left side flashers. With the things wired up as is, when I turn on the right (passenger side) turn signal the left side flashes but not the right side.

Hope this explains it better and thanks for helping.

The use box all checked out? Follow the wires that you know are for one thing. do the grounds check out. Continuity? There's a few other possibilities. hope this helps

You do not have enough wires. You should have a

orange/lightblue

brown

black/pink

lightgreen/orange

black

Here's a diagram

Close - 1 Final One

To all the folks that helped I really appreciate it. First time I have ever worked through a wiring diagram. Kind of always thought it was out of my skill level. But with what you guys have sent me and going slow it seems to be close.

I have turn lights on both sides now.

One final question, looking at the diagram it shows a ground. Where would the ground be? From spending all of the morning underneath the back of the truck I can't seem to find it.

Thanks again.

The ground can be anywhere, just run it to the frame and clean it up a bit before bolting or screwing the eye to the frame. The factory ground commonly is on the inside of the frame rail on the left side, usually on the sheet metal cross member back there.

A suggestion on the mirrors, if you want to keep those heads, would be to build an extension. You can get a piece of flat aluminum like th e original mounts are, paint up a piece of flat steel, or use stainless steel flat stock. Drill a hole in each end and use that to mount to.

My factory ground - at least one of them - is behind the LH tail light assembly, not sure if your 83 was the same. But, yeah, you just need that black wire to connect to the body somewhere, there should be an eyelet on the factory wire but you can add your own grounds if necessary.

These trucks get rusty. Up high behind the tailight housing would be a good dry place to put a ground. But then you need to make sure the bed is grounded good to the frame, and then the battery negative needs a good ground to the frame. The factory had some spots and jumpers for some of this, but they can get old and corroded. You can make your own ground path like this if you need to.

SUCCESS - Thanks!!!

Gents-

Thanks for all the help - all the lights (front & back) are working. Turns out there was no ground in the back. Also found some wires that were nearly cut/worn through. Lot of troubleshooting but with all your help I was able to learn a lot and also get my F100 one step closer to being on the road.

Thanks again
