I have V-10 2002 4x4 limited that at 217,000 miles it is in need of new front bearings. Stopped by local ford dealer to get estimate. They want $502 per side just for the hubs no labor. I then went to autozone to check on prices. They have a duralast with course threads that is $149 and one with Fine Threads that is $203. Fine thread one comes with new studs. Autozone employee said diference with course or fine threads is a difference in lug bolts not mounting studs. This does not sound right to me. Does any one know the difference and if so the advantages to either? also how hard is it to replace outer seals when hubs are removed?
It's not difficult to do yourself. Early Ex's had coarse threads; later years had fine. Some reuse 4 mounting studs, but you'll need to use heat to break 'em loose. By outer seal, you mean the yellow o ring?

If there's oil leaking it sounds like an inner axle seal and not the hub. The outer axle seal is a dust seal and isn't really intended to prevent fluid loss.
That's the inner seal (not as simple as a wheel bearing), let me check to see if anyone has posted a how-to. I can't recall one recently, but Bion might have one.
Do a search for the inner seal next to the diff. There is a special tool for it but I don't think you need it. You have to pull the ring gear carrier out. The later Ex's took the fine lug nut threads, I think after '02. There is a thread on the seal, maybe in SD.
I rebuilt my entire front end a few months ago. Replaced my bearing hubs, inner dust seals, outer axle seals, axle u-joints, ball joints, tie rod ends, and finally my draglink.
I bought my drivetrain parts from drivetrainamerica.com. They had good prices and shipped everything very quickly.

If you are going to buy at the store you are shopping get the Timken with 3X the warranty or you will likely be replacing the Chinese hubs again soon. Take a lugnut with you for match up.
Replacing inner axle seals sounds like it may be beyond what you care to do personally. Weigh the large expense of replacement with how slow the leak is but keep it full of gear oil.

I only noticed the leak after having driven 190 miles with the front end locked never noticed a leak during regular driving i have to manually lock hubs n do so this time of year for huntin and forgot to unlock before taking a road trip with wife 2 weeks ago

That's because when unlocked everything is still and the oil level is below your seal. Check the condition of the oil and check the breather also.

Excellent advice Brent, I have seen a clogged breather tube on a Chevy dually's rear cause it to leak gear oil everywhere when it heated up driving. Was looking at all kinds of work on it, found and removed large dried mud blob from end of breather hose and it instantly behaved itself from then on. My favorite kind of repair, free and easy!
