Wheel Hub Replacement Question
Just got my truck back from the dealership. I thought I had a bad wheel bearing and also some other front end problems so I let the guys at Ford check it out. Confirmed the wheel bearing, everything else looked good. They also quoted me $1000 for one side, but I prefer to do my own maintenance.
Bought myself a couple of new non-ABS Timken units and I'm waiting on the parts to do the replacement of both wheel hub assemblies.
The tech also quoted me for replacing the dust seal and outer oil seal, but never mentioned that it was leaking.
Is this just preventative maintenance in replacing those parts while they are easy to access with the hub off? I did notice a thin coat of what appears to be light oil on my manual locking hubs, is this indicative of a leak? Is there a better way to check if I have a leaking front axle which would require me to redo the inner and outer seals?
I'm trying to wrap up work on the front end for a while and since I need to replace the hub, I figured I should check to see if there's any other parts I should replace.

Dust seal is just that, the other seal is a big one on the half-shaft - you’ll see it as soon as you break everything down. The big seal is about $60 and there is a tool to seat the seal properly with the correct depth.
As you replace the hub you will probably need the four large threaded pins that hold the hub in place.
Dust seals behind u-joint on front drive shaft (4x4), upgraded version
Axle u-joints
Upper ball joints
Lower ball joints
Vacuum hub seal and OTC 6697 seating tool ('05-up coil spring trucks)
Hubs w/abs wire, 4 new studs & o-ring
4x4 hub seal/o-ring
Brakes
Tie rods, drag link, stabilizer
All with seating tool about $1000 in parts. Here is a video I used for reference and it is spot on.
Not sure what year you have but there are difference from '04-down and '05-up.
Good luck!
