Thinking about buying a scanner for my XLT. That's if they are worth having for preventive maintenance, staying on top of things before problems occur. Not sure if they are useful for that, maybe they are good for seeing trends or setting a baseline. With all that being the case, then, what kind of scanner is recommended? Figuring the cheap units aren't worth the trouble, and so maybe a midrange model might be the way to go. So whattaya think?
Ok. Well thanks for that, real interesting. I haven't had a laptop in quite while or blue teeth or a wiifi (single right now) and would prefer, I guess, a standalone scanner, but a good one. I see some 20 dollar "universal" jobs at the big box stores and figure they are not quite good enough?
The ELM327 scantool can be used with a smart phone, ect also & is Way more powerful & less expensive in data info gathering & presentation than any low or medium dollar code reader, or scantool. The ELM327 puts my Actron CP3145 to shame & for Way less of my gold.
If your looking for a hand held corded plug in scantool, with say, graphing displays, its likely gonna cost around, or over $200 & still won't access all of your vehicles controllers/computers that the ELM327 will for around $20!!!!
As noted in the ELM thread, it can be had with a USB corded hook up configuration, or wireless with WiFi, or Bluetooth, your choice & all are about the same price.
Hey pawpaw, I did read it, but my eyes start to glaze over on that stuff. Just a simple man doin a simple job, tryin to get through the day. Thanks for the advice!!!
Well now I'm also looking at ScanGage II and UltraGauge II and some others. They are kind of a hybrid scan tool that are used to provide running diagnostics in real time.
The ELM 327 web page was a little unclear whether they are CAN bus compliant, their application guide stops at 2008, I have a 2009.
