Harbor freight has this scanner for $40. Is it too cheap and would it be worth having in the tool box for those very seldom check engine lights. I don't need to make a living withit. Or would it be better to just go to AZ and have them check it when it happens. I am well aware that you get what you pay for and don't want to waste my money. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=46030
for 40 bucks it seems like its worth a try. you dont really need to be able to clear the codes, once u find the problem and fix it the check engine light will go off after starting the car 3 times. and all the codes can be found in a chilton manual.
I have a 94 crown vic and to clear the codes you can pull the battery cable.
I have a code reader form walmart, its the INNOVA Electronics (3145) that I
have not tried. But I have an engine light on now I think its time to plug it in!
I have a lot of stuff bought from Harbor Freight Tools - it is sometimes good stuff, sometimes ok stuff and sometimes really horrible stuff. It is not a question of price - I have a jack bought there for $8, that has out lasted, and out lifted a whole mess of more expensive ones, in the 7 years since I bought it. I have a cut-off saw, that cost me $29 - better than anywhere else, and still cutting metal. So, maybe it will be worth it, or maybe it will just sit on your bench forever, till a mouse uses it as lunch.
That is one of the reasons I asked. Just about every tool I have bought from there has been cheap. I even bought a more expensive set of pliers, one of them broke in my hand. I may just put it on my x-mass list.

Just pull the ecu fuse and you will not loose your radio stations.
