I had a strange problem a while back with AOD transmission in my F250 such that when I shifted it into reverse the engine would shudder and usually die. At first I thought it was some kind of strange wiring issue, but then I stumbled on some threads about being low on fluid causing this. I was always sure, but for the most part I believe those posters were talking about the later E4OD, which I guess is quite different from my AOD. But thinking I had nothing to lose, I checked the fluid and I was indeed about 2/3 of a quart low. Expecting nothing, I added some fluid and started it up and was amazed to find the problem disappeared. But still, I think this issue has more to do with an entirely different transmission, and further more-what kind of transmission does anything but just shift late or not work at all when the fluid is low?? Has anyone else out there with an AOD experienced this?
Yes, it's definitely an AOD. It's got the EFI 5.0. It's kind of a strange truck I suppose as aside from this then-new option for 1985 the truck is pretty well stripped down.
Auto transmissions are very sensitive to fluid level and the AOD is also sensitive to TV cable adjustment. Have you messed with that recently? Small changes in the preload on this cable can produce dramatic changes in the shift RPM and firmness, if you find it is bogging the motor on downshift and/or it seems to require more rpm to shift up then back out the cable preload a notch and test drive. Be careful with this when you release the lock the cable will snap open since it is spring loaded so mark the starting position and grasp it to make sure it doesn't get away from you.
