I pulled the axle out of my Ford 9 inch to replace an axle seal, and discovered the stripped splines. The previous owner said someone "went through" the rear diff, and it looks like it. Except for the damage to the driver side axle splines (same side as the axe seal leak) and the carrier bearings are trashed. (carrier has a good amount of play in all directions). But everything looks brand new, so it must have gone south pretty quick.
My question is, would you guys replace the axles and carrier bearings and call it good? Or would you assume the carrier splines are toast as well, (they look good) and just replace the whole center section? It's an open ended carrier, so I'm not super opposed to the upgrade to a locker or spool.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks.
If you are going to throw money at it to fix it you might as well do it right. And if you are going to spend money anyhow might as well get what you want. A posi unit makes a ton of difference off road.
