I am looking to replace the muffler on my truck while the box is off...I have a 2000 with a slightly modified 7.3....only mods are EBPV removal, dorman uppies.....and I also have a veg conversion used mainly in the summer time. Looking for a non bank breaking replacement muffler.....any suggestions would be great...Thanks.
Cool..thanks for the quick reply.....which model do you have...4040? XL? and what did it do to the sound of your truck....I am not necessarily looking to make it loud or obnoxious....( i guess that means I have crossed into the getting old category )....
Mike I've been told that you old guys like the sound of a magnaflow muffler. I had one on my truck it sounded throaty when I was on it and quiet when I wasn't. Never had any sign of turbo whistle either.
If it's stock exhaust it going to a 3.5". I had one of the walker mufflers on my truck and liked it. I did get a bit of drone and whistle with it. You have to move some hangers and such. It's a pretty big high flow muffler for under $100. Here is a thread on it: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/2...m-muffler.html
I got mine at Napa and had a exhaust shop install it for me.
Think it's a 4040xl, been so long since I put it in I don't quite remember. If you want it loud, you can go with the straight pipe; however, most of the folks that I know that used the straight pipe has since switched it back. You can go on YouTube and view videos of trucks with aero turbines in them to give you an idea of what to expect.
Edit: just went out and checked, it's a regular 4040

Ditto on the Walker BTM. You should be able to get one bought and installed for around $150. Again, that will be factory 3.5" pipes.
Or for about $300 you can get something like a MBRP 4" turbo-back straight-thru exhaust system and install it yourself (well, may need a buddy for 10 minutes, but that's all). I prefer the sound of the 4" systems, but my Walker BTM truck sounds decent too, just more "whistle."
Another vote for Walker BTM. PN is 21470, about $55 lots of places. Local muffler shop welded it in for $100, but that's CA prices. The sound is not Flowmasters on a Cobra Jet 428, but you can hear the turbo and it flows well.
Another vote for no muffler at all. It isn't any louder at an idle, and even at full blow it isn't deafining inside. (Outside is a different story lol) Cheaper than any other option too.
I tried muffler delete and it was crazy-loud... to me. I went through a lot of trouble to quiet the injectors, so now a loud exhaust is very noticeable.
diddo.. I tried muffler delete and pulling the camper was unbearable loud. Just to loud for me. I installed a pass through silencer from summit $40 and it is about what a stock sound level would be.
I am straight piped for about 4 years now. I had a company in new york custom bend me a section of 3.5 tubing and then had a guy weld it in for me. Mine was pricey, the pipe with shipping ended up being $100 all by itself. I couldn't find anyone around here that was willing or able to do the bends. It is definitely louder than stock, in the cab and way louder outside. It helped with egt's though. Sometimes I do think about going back to a muffler though. I am certain my neighbors would approve. I AM getting old.
That price from Summit racing is the best I have seen.i did a quick search on Summits site and can't find anything that is 3.5 inch for under $300.

Yeah...if you can get that Walker BTM from Summit to your door for $50-60, you can find a shop that will weld it on for another $50. $100 solution is very inexpensive but worth it.
Why do you say a straight pipe lowers EGT's more than a straight-through muffler? If both have no restrictions through a 3.5" pipe...I don't see why the muffler option wouldn't cool just as well.
