instrument cluster and plug swap question

I have 83 4.9 wiring w/batt. and oil lights. Installing cluster w/tach and all gauges from 83 250(i think). I did dsII conversion. My old plug/cluster is 18 pin plug, the new one is 14 pins.
Y is it opposite from what haynes says to be w/gauges and w/o gauges.
Also, i believe the only wire i have to run for gauges to work with old harness is "from cluster" just before fuse box, i have to tie in a wire that would run to #1 on regulator in order to have all gauges.

It looks like i have the plug and wire harness of w/gauges(even though it had 2 lights, and the new cluster that HAS gauges, has the plug of w/o gauges. Im confused to say the least.

Why don't you wire in a light in series with the "I" terminal on the regulator like the factory did? If you look around up in the cavities of the cluster you might find a spot to put a light.

Im not trying to hook up a light. I am swapping old cluster w/ oil + batt. "dummy lights" for a cluster with oil + batt. gauges and factory tach.
The plug to my old cluster is 18 pin and the new cluster has 14 pin. This is opposite from what the haynes book says it should be.

Haynes manuals are full of incorrect info. Always have been.

You cannot simply swap the cluster. The entire dash harness is different. There are ways to modify it, but getting the (usually) useless alt gauge to function is almost impossible. Odd as it sounds, the alt light is actually more accurate and reliable than most of the alt gauges. As long as the bulb isn't burned out, and stays off, it tells you more than gauge ever will....... It will at least alert you to a failed alt. The gauge doesn't......

Thats part of the problem i was having. The alt. light was coming on and not charging the batt. So along with having a oil gauge and tach, i thought this thw best route.
