me and my dad just got a 91 e150 with a 351w and an e4od it ran kinda ackward so we had a code reader hooked up and it told us that the egr valve was stuck and told us that we needed a new one. but is there any way to avoid this? there about $150!
I think the EGR-specific code you get just tells you that the EVP (EGR valve position) sensor is out of range. There would probably be other codes that indicate a mixture control problem if it was the EGR valve itself. Unless you get those other codes, I would suspect the problem is just the EVP sensor. The sensor is a lot cheaper than the EGR valve.
If you can find out what the signal (voltage, resistance?) should be from the EVP sensor, you can test it with a VOM to see if it's ok.
If the sensor is ok, I would remove the EGR valve and try cleaning it up. Often EGR valve problems are caused by accumulation of carbon (soot) from the exhaust gas.
Don't forget to check the vacuum source and diaphragm for the EGR valve.
Can you be more specific on what exactly error code you get?
Any other code ,related to oxigen sensor, popping out?
What mileage you are talking about?
I dont remember what exactly the code was, but an o2 sensor code came up that said that the o2 sensor wouldnt read higher than .100 volts or some thing. and the van has about 150,000 miles on it
