Cold Weather Hutch Mod Issues
Fuel Cooler results
I pulled this:
I just asked, "what temp does diesel fuel need to me in a HUEI injected engine?"
His response was concise and too the point. Cat engineer: "120 F is OK but hotter than we like, 140 F is dangerously hot. Fuel over 140 F loses density which slightly hurts hp but the lubricity of the diesel falls off dramatically increasing wear on fuel system components significantly."
We end up w/ hotter fuel w/ the regulated return system than a stock set up.
I remember my thinking on putting the cooler before the fuel entered the heads. I wanted hotter fuel in the tank since I gelled up once w/ my mixer valve pulled out.
Now where is this is today? Don't know, but it was a question back in the day.
That made for some interesting reading....Thanks!
In other words, I've noticed that the proponents of these factory equipment deletions and substitutions that remove or modify OEM engineering like the fuel sending unit apparatus in the tanks, the intake air heaters, the EBPV's, etc... are not test driving their modifications in Saskatchewan.
The marvel of the 7.3L is that it continues to run for hundreds of thousands of miles DESPITE the things we do to it.

Ah, the old Diesel Stop days - the old forum wars & internal arguments. You could always log on at any time of the day and read a good fight.....
.......Wow, it's been about 10 years!Anyhow, I wonder what ever happen with Dennis' spring fuel temp test and what he determined. Also, this thread was about 2 years prior to the introduction of ULSD. Which has less lubricity than it's predecessor (prior to adding additives at the terminal). I wonder if the fuel change had made things worse or better?
I don't even think I know anyone in a street application that is running a fuel cooler.......do you?

edit: PS, you just hit 9,000 posts ---- 1,000 to go

I run regulated return, but still have the factory tank pick-up...no hutch mod. I can't tell you what the fuel temp is after running 250 miles between fuel stops (29g tank), but when pulling the horse trailer (20k combined) when I stop for fuel in the summer....I'll get a vapor, like a fog coming out of the filler neck.
It makes me wonder.
