I got a speedometer from SpeedHut that runs off GPS. A small antenna with a magnet sits on top of the dash. Not only does it tell you your speed, run the odometer, it also tells you your elevation. No cables to run, works with anything as long as you are outside - doesn't work in a parking garage or in a tunnel.
Perfect. Thanks everyone. I have looked into the gps ones and I like them alot. Also found a cool electronic one and if its as easy as Tinman says it is to hook it up I may go that route. Both are bookmarked hopefully for some not so future usage.
Remi. Oh ya thanks for the multiqote lesson. Always seen that button but never tried to figure out what it was. The less buttons I push the longer my computer runs without a visit to the puter doctor.

What about those days that it's not nice out, another words cloudy outside? I sometimes have problems with my GPS when it's cloudy out... sounds like it's the same...

Remi, aren't you running EFI? I was thinking you were, if so you still need the speed sensor in the tranny to feed signal to the computer. A GPS speedometer would be cool.
So we don't get locked onto a dedicated GPS speedometer, consider a GPS navigation system. Mine plugs into the power port or cigarette lighter and mounts to the windshield or anywhere convenient. It is very nice to have a map program as well as a speedometer in one device. Guess I should have made my point a bit better in my first response to this thread.

Good Idea. I did buy a small gps nav system for the truck. I can use it as well as an electronic one in the guage cluster. There problem solved. This is a good site.......

I dropped the efi and went the simple route with an Edlebrock 1406 carb I was using on the jeep before I changed it over to efi. Truth is I know how to work on the carb system... efi...did I mention I don't really like electronic things. They scare me....

LOL you probably mentioned it somewhere, I just haven't caught up!
I have thought about the same thing, but keep insisting to stick with it..

Good question Jeff, maybe I mis spoke.......I never thought about EFI. Might complicate how the speedo gets tied into the system.
I'm used to doing things "caveman" style and am not up on all this newfangled stuff.....
The electric speedo should still work as a "stand alone", but what the computer requires is another issue.
Hey Holehawgg,
I'll chime in on this one. We went the electronic speedo route with some concern as I'm normally not a big electronic guy. It was pretty easy - we had to find a flat mile stretch of marked roads to calibrate the thing. That was about it - no running wires, selecting speedo gears, how big are my tires, etc.
One thing I didn't like was we chose to do the calibration a second time
just to make sure we got it right. It erased the mileage we had already done on the odometer. It could easily have been user error but I really want to show the true miles on the odometer.
Looking good up there - think warm thoughts. It got to 14 farenheit last night here in Austin - if it got that cold here I don't even want to think about where you guys live.

I had one in my '65 that worked great even when it was raining, and two friends who have them in their resto's. I think the antennas are much better than the ones in the navigation GPS's.
