Ajax trick. Old school and I mean old school mechanics trick of the trade. Maybe not typical auto mech as I have never seen any of them use it, but at a very young age I used to be an aircraft mech for USMC. We would always have bolts and screws that would NOT want to come out.
So the trick with AJAX is:
Started with philips head screws that start to strip out head we would use saliva cause its sticky and spit on the tip of the screw driver or in our case #2 apex and then pack the #2 apex tip with AJAX. It would indeed fill in the space and provide excellent traction to remove screw. Once in a while the tip of the Apex would snap off and once in a while the screw head would finish stripping out, but I would say 90% of the time we would be able to remove the screw without drilling it and easy outing it.
Hey trick works with sockets and nuts/bolts also. Just have to pack in more ajax and sometimes lightly tap it on nut or bolt.
Our pipes are about 1/2 the cost of the barnone pipes. Too bad we can't keep them in stock and ready to ship.
I don't know why, but I always get nervous when someone talks their product up so much.
Me too. Are you doing the fab work on your pipes or are you having someone else do it? Obviously I examined the set you sent down to Cody awhile back. If I needed some bellowed stock pipes and I didn't feel like taking up the shop time to build a set, your pipes would be my first choice.
I'm assuming the Bar None kit is using a flat flange and gasket on it similar to the IH pipes. If that is the case, I would rather have Jim's pipes all day long. Jim puts a ball flare on the top connection to completely eliminate any gaskets up there. Word of advise to anyone using those though, tighten them pretty tight and use locktite on them.

We used to do them ourselves, but I have a guy come and do them here in our shop. He's an awesome TIG welder, I could only dream about welding like him. I think those pipes I sent to Cody were like the second set we did, they look much nicer now.
And yes, ours do not use any gaskets. We install almost all the ones we build for customers here in the shop and only had one customer come back with leaks. Turned out his collector cracked and we could never get them tight enough till we figured it out. I'm not sure how well Loctite will work on something that gets that hot. Maybe fine? I never thought about it.
Someone asked about a core charge on the up-pipes. We need your old pipes back because its' waaaaay cheaper to use your pipes and FLANGES than to try and have everything made from scratch. It's a pain dealing with core charges, but our goal is always to make things as affordable and high quality as possible.
Well, too little too late I guess. I asked a few days ago and had to get some ordered before the end of this week. I wish you would have replied sooner and I could have considered it. It wasn't just Bar None who talked up there product. I had a few forum members give testimony to their product and how good they are. I was looking at one other vendor that couldn't guarantee I'd have them when I needed them. I guess I just hate the whole "should have been here yesterday/could have done better mentality" especially when what's done is done. Thanks for the input though.

Makes me wish I sent my old pipes into you to get done. I just scrapped them

Yeah Cody's bolts came loose, but we tightened them down and put locktite on them and they haven't backed off again. I think we just used blue locktite. If you used red I'm not sure if they'd every come back off again. LOL.

So I looked on your website and dont see any up pipes available. How would we know you sell them? How much do you sell them for? Or I guess rather how much do you retrofit the old ones for?

Hey, I didn't want to sound negative in any way. Lots of guys say the barnone pipes work good, and if they are availabe when you need them then you're all set. I sell mine on refereals and I simply can't keep them in stock. If you had told me you needed some I'd have told you it'll be a while, so hopefully you get them in a timely manner and they are as good as everyone says they are.

I don't have them on my site because they sell faster than we can build them. There would always be an "Out of Stock" sign on that page, so why bother. And like I said we use most of them here in our shop and almost never get to sell/ship them out. I only have 12 or 14 core sets to work with, between OBS and SD and they don't sit around here long. I've tried to get someplace local to make them from scratch, but that jacks the cost up too much. I rely on getting my welder here in evenings and weekends when he's available.
I should have more in a few weeks if anyone's interested. I can't discuss prices in the forums, please call or shoot me an email.

No worries Jim. If I had time on my side as a luxury, I would have considered a better design. Unfortunately, I had to wait until I had the $$ to get these done and now my trip is coming up next Thursday, so I needed to make sure I got them replaced. I am just looking forward to getting some mileage back and getting rid of the exhaust smell in the cab.
Well, guys, a little update on what is happening with the progress. I got it back yesterday and drove it home. The two biggest things I immediately noticed is the boost builds much quicker and is more consistent. The second was the nice smell in the cab from no exhaust! I am pretty stoked.
In other news, I resealed the fuel bowl with all new O-Rings (until I can do E-Fuel), changed the thermostat to a 203 from Diesel Site, and heavily de-greased the entire engine bay as well as underneath. The truck is running like a completely different animal. I am pretty happy. The Uppies from Bar None are really nice quality and seem to fit well from what the install told me.
We leave Thursday morning for our Texas trip so I'll report mileage and stuff then. Oh, also my temp gauge now sits at the R and gets to the M under load. We'll see how that goes. It sounds more like a 7.3 should sound from what I remember from my last '97 I owned.
I still havent finished mine yet. Im wrenching my own stuff cause well Im just not trusting the other guys too much and I am insulating and heating my garage now so it will be comfy inside. Its good to hear everything is working smoothly. I recon I wont be done with my truck until May or June as I will most likely sink about 5K into it.
Was about 250 bucks, but I know the guy and he owns a performance muffler/truck shop. He does pretty amazing work and is well known in the community, so I trust him. I don't really trust easily either. Hope yours comes together ok. I would have tackled this myself, but I was under a little bit of a time crunch.
Wow.that's a good deal.I sure wouldn't do it for that in a million years. Glad you are having good luck with it! Maybe someday I'll get mine together..
yeah 250 seems pretty cheap. I was thinking more like 600-800 especially in Oceanside. That place is outrageously expensive. Well Ok maybe not Oceanside but southern CA is horribly expensive.
