Ok I have a 66 short bed with the custom cab chrome and tool box on passenger side. This bed is in good condition (straight as an arrow) the only problem is the rust on the bed floor that ate up into the walls of the bed (it's pretty bad). I am lucky enough to have access to an equally as nice and completely rust free short bed off a parts truck but it does not have the holes for chrome or the tool box.
My question is, is there a replacement bed floor similar to the one I have that I can fabricate to fit the bed? I am a welder/fabricator and the job wouldn't be too hard if I could find a replacement floor. I would prefer to fix the original bed for sentimental reasons over replacing the whole thing with a donor bed that would need modification. Can this be done or should I scrap the idea and just take the rust free bed? Thanks!
My opinion, go for the rust-free box and drill some holes. The short-wheelbase toolbox is relatively rare and desirable and therefore sellable. The problem with the toolbox is that, although it may seem handy, it will leak and no weatherstrip is available to restore it.
