I have a 1987 F350 crew cab daully with the diesel V8 ( International motor ? ) and want to take the 4 speed manual out and fit a 4 speed over drive auto unit ,,,, any ideas on which one to use ?
E40D.it's electronically controlled.find yourself a 89-94 idi diesel donor truck and grab it's trans, ecm, wiring harness, cross member, drive shaft if needed and sensors.buy the whole donor.
Am also considering taking out the diesel and fitting a 502 ci big block Chevy I have lying around thats near new with a dual throttle body LPG gas system set up that mounts on the intake and an OD auto to suit it. Any clues as to if the sump will clear in the F350 engine bay ? My F350 is a 2wd.
I can't believe you are thinking of putting a bowtie motor/trans in a Ford! You do know that at some point the entire truck will spontaneously combust because of that, right? Seriously, the IDI is a good motor, but if you don't like the 4 speed manual, you might be better off trying to find an automatic-equiped truck and selling yours, since you'll need to find a truck like that for a parts donor anyway.
I dont really want to fit the Chevy mtr etc but I also don't want to sell the truck as in Australia it has history in the Speedway world. Just trying to get the rpm's down from the 3300 rpm @ 100kph ( 65 mph ) she's doing now. I am going to have a look at the rear end ratio's before we make any moves to change stuff around. Just trying to get the fuel economy down the cheapest way using what we have already or what can be brought for not a lot of bucks. One thing I will do is take the 215/75 x 16 tires off the rear and fit 8.25 x 16 tires. Any one got any ideas where I can buy new extruded aluminium running boards also ? Remember this is a crew cab long bed.
first thing to do is get did of those tiny tires and put a set of 265-75 16's on it
the 215 is 28.7 inches tall and 8.5 inches wide
the 265 is 32 tall and 10.5 wide
the 3 1/4 inch taller tire will make a big difference in fuel mileage.
adding a gear vendor overdrive unit will make a big difference, and probably be cheaper than doing a trans swap.
It might be worth doing a financial sanity check. If your primary motivation is to improve fuel mileage, run the numbers. How many miles do you drive? What kind of realistic improvement do you expect to get? How much will it cost to convert?
We once thought about buying a different car to improve our gas costs. After running the number we found that it would start paying for itself in about 20+ years. Didn't make much sense.
What did the ZF5 come in ? Is it an auto ? Was it ever fitted to the International V8 diesel ? Will it bolt rite up ? The truck has a " Mile Maker " under drive unit now bolted in behind the gearbox so one idea was to swap the rear end gears out and sell off the under drive unit and replace it with an over drive unit and then do the tire change.
