Leave everything like it is and put some 18" truck tires on it. That would be like putting high gears in it and then that underdrive would come in handy. And it would look cool!
he has a dually pickup and wants a auto trans guys.your large wide tire suggestions isn't going to help him nor is a zf5 lol.
when you go tall tires, they are typically wider.he would need spacers so his duals didn't rub and have a higher rolling resistant truck worse than what he started with.one that sits higher and increases the drag by allowing more air under a now higher sitting truck.
none of these suggestions match, nor come close to swapping in an E40D trans like he originally asked about.
a zf5 suggestion is sound if wants a manual trans, but then he still needs the trans, likely a new clutch, the driveshaft and the cross member.
if he's going through all this work of swapping a trans anyway though,he might as well get want he wants in the end, with the od auto.
as far as suggesting keeping a non od trans and try gearing up with just taller tires..............well,i admit im stuck in the '80's too but only when it comes to music lol.
Yes , But we also want to slam the truck on the ground and big tires makes this harder.. An OD manual is ok but prefer an auto with OD. I really want to get rid of some weight too and that manual with the dog box behind it is heavy . Hope to find 4.11 ratio's in the rear end now and then changing them to 2.98 or similar and a OD auto will get the rev's way down to like 1800 or 1900 rpm at 100kph - 60 mph. Then the final thing will be fitting the taller tires if we have too. Still looking for options guys on what auto will fit ????
Also I have been told in Australia we have an auto trans called an AOD unit. Have you guys heard of it .Will this fit and work with the diesel International motor ?
the E40D trans is the only option *****.the aod only came behind the smaller gas engines in the f150's (probably/maybe the older light duty f250's too,i dunno.) it would not have held up to the 460's and diesels.
as for gear options, you'll find 3.55's are the highest option offered for the seterling 10.25 rears.they used to offer a 3.08 in the aftermarket but they seemed to have dropped it many years ago.it would be for just hwy cruisers only, and make a heavy truck feel like a dog and really hurt a hd trucks abilities, save for 55mph+ hwy cruising i guess.they likely didn't sell well.
What did the ZF5 come in ? Is it an auto ? Was it ever fitted to the International V8 diesel ? Will it bolt rite up ? The truck has a " Mile Maker " under drive unit now bolted in behind the gearbox so one idea was to swap the rear end gears out and sell off the under drive unit and replace it with an over drive unit and then do the tire change.
The zf5 is a manual and if it's from a idi diesel I should swap right in
