Cooling issues after being rear ended.

Long story short, got rear ended and for whatever reason this caused my lower radiator hose to explode. It started over heating a little down the road after being hit so I opened the hood to see coolant spewing out of the lower or around the lower hose.

I figured it'd be no big deal, but I was wrong. I got home and replaced the hose, filled up the radiator only to find that all the fluid is leaking out from what looks like the hose. I go under the truck and realize the lower hose doesn't go straight to the water pump. It first goes to what I'm guessing is some kind of oil cooler? And that the fluid is leaking out of the inlet to this particular device. Huh. I assume it's no big deal but I can't for the life of me find this part. The oil filter and everything is on it.

Also there's also the problem that coolant still isn't circulating. It just gets hot and explodes out down there. I'm assuming either the water pump or thermostat are out but that's the least of my worries for now. I need to get the system to actually hold coolant first so can anyone help me out with this? Could I just get an older style hose and bypass the oil cooler?

Well I decided to pull the radiator to clean it while I'm replacing the water pump and it has a brownish sludge and also power steering fluid inside. interesting.

Forget about being rear ended, it didnt have anything to with your other problems UNLESS it caused you to hit something in front of you......Im assuming you have an automatic, it should have an intank tranny cooler, if it were leaking you might have ATF in the radiator. If you have a P/S cooler, it should be cooled by air only.....Im not familiar with an in tank power steering cooler, so im unsure of how P/S fluid could get in the radiator

And if an engine has an oil cooler, odds are it needs it, dont bypass something like this, you might end up needing to replace an engine

Yeah, I figured it must be atf after a minute. I'm just going to replace the radiator while it's out.

Anyway, I found a pretty good picture of the oil cooler.

I have coolant leaking from the long coolant neck that the lower radiator hose connects to. I'm assuming this isn't fixable. Can I just pull the cooler off?

Hmm.. ok, it doesn't look like Ford sells the part anymore though. what are my options?

if its cracked, maybe a radiator repair shop can braze it. even if ford stopped producing it, a junkyard ought to have some. By 1992, i woulda thought most engine peripherals would be standardized, and this should be a common 460 part???

Ya know, scan down the page on this forum, another guy adresses this same issue, and apparently some owners are bypassing the oil cooler........

Awesome, thanks. I'm really interested in this cooler now though but it doesn't seem like much is known about it. I'm going to see if I can fix it before anything. Here's the part number, after finally getting it off

f2te-6b856-aa

It comes in 2 parts. One's the oil filter relocator, and the actual heat exchanger bolts onto that. It looks like a pretty janky and one off part. No wonder there isn't much out there about it.

There's 2 stickers on it. They both say long oil coolers Inc and have a Ford stamp. One has a Ford part number and I'm guessing the other is the Long part number, it's too faded though. If anyone has any info on this POS that'd be cool.

Well, here is the actually coolant box part. Poorly made as I suspected. I'm going to get pictures of the cast iron adapter piece after I clean it up.

I'm going to pull off the coolant tubes next and cut the box open. See how repairable this thing is.
