Reduced Power when cold

Hi Guys,

I hope everyone had a good Christmas.

My truck still has the occasional power loss. In the last several month i noticed, that i have reduced power, when the truck is cold. (outside below 55). she takes off really slow and then moves as if you would hold the brake at the same time.
Above 2700rpm the engine takes off like crazy and jerks you into the seat. She runs like that all the way to and from work.. about 40 min each way.
I did noticed however, that if i drive for about 10 min, than shut the engine off and start it again, i have full power at the entire rpm range.
In addition i have lately problems to get her started.. have to crank it several times.Checked glow plugs and relay and both are good. Once finally cranked, it pours out a lot of grey smoke for a short time and then clears up.

I do not have the problem with the cold start nor the reduced power, if i keep the truck plugged in, unless it gets below 35. then it cranks fine but i have reduced power.

Any thought?

No guarantee this is it, but your power loss symptoms sound somewhat like the problem that came with my new truck. I got mine licked before thecild weather came, but it did seem to be temp dependent and the issue did seem to disappear on a warm restart. Not sure if would say that was the case every time, but seemed common.

Anyway - my issue was the BARO sensor. Swapped mine for a known good one and my power loss disappeared and hasn't been back for ~6 months.

Not sure the hard start would be related, but may be.

I'd post my thread link but I'm on my phone now. If you do a search for BARO, it should be one of the first hits.

Good luck!

Well, I was gonna say "EBPV", but then I saw your sig and you don't even have one. Soooo... that idea goes out the window.

Well, the PCM adjusts timing, duty cycle, etc. for temperature based on EOT and IAT. I would hook up to an Interceptor, AE, whatever, and monitor those two things to see if they reflect reality. Do you have an aftermarket intake? If so, what did you do with the IAT?

My IAT is still connected to the harness and tie raped next to the intake filter.
This weekend I checked my GPRS and noticed it was not making contact even though you could here it come on. So I went and replaced it.. This at least fixed the starting issue for now. . Still have the power loss though...but at the moment it's just too cold to work on the truck..

Hmmm, I was thinking you may have a glow plug issue contributing. I’ll keep thinking about it.

Uh, have you been thinking about it since the end of 2013, when he started this thread?

Not it trying to be difficult, just take a second and glance at the dates. It will save bringing up a 6 year old dead thread and bumping guys who need help today.

I have noticed the mobile site makes pages jump with its ad system, then you post on a older related post by accident

thats interesting. I don’ t use the mobile side as I don’t like the layout. I wonder if the mods can give any insight on this issue.
