Question Calling all '65 Detectives

Hello everyone. Merry Christmas late and New Year's early.

This is my first new thread and I could use some of your sage advice/knowledge. First off, i'm interested in finding a 60's stick-bed truck but am running into an interesting question: How do you know if the truck was originally a stick bed or if the short/long bed was just removed and a flat-bed added. (Of course that's what Ford did, but somewhat original versus total aftermarket swap I guess is what i'm after.)

Also, I ran across an add for a truck for sale that states it has a factory automatic (it's a '65), but the photos clearly show what looks like a shifter on the floor. I can't make out a clutch pedal, so i'm inclined to believe it's automatic (darn), but what's the shifter? Here's a photo close to the one I saw.

Thanks in advance.

1966 and earlier: There's no way to know by the VIN or codes on the Warranty Plate what bed (if any) was factory installed.

Also, I ran across an ad for a truck for sale that states it has a factory automatic (it's a '65 it's a 1967), but the photos clearly show what looks like a shifter on the floor.

Common problem: The shift collar breaks, people don't know where to get a replacement, so they install a floor shifter.

Pot metal shift collar has an internal bridge that connects it to the shift tube. Over time, the bridge develops cracks, eventually snaps off.

D5TZ-7228-A (replaced C5TZ-7228-A & C9TZ-7228-A) .. A/T Shift Collar-Available from Ford! / Applications: 1965/77 F100/350.

1967's look similar to 1968/72's, but looks can be deceiving. For one example:

1967 has a one year only heater controlled by ***** (below radio). 1968/72's have a heater control panel with sliding levers.

It is a 67 as it has door open levers in lieu of the 68 and up paddles.

It could be an Hurst indymatic shifter on the floor. Looks just like a three speed shifter.

Thanks for the info. Guys. Number, as always, you know more than expected, haha. The photo wasn't of the '65 i'm looking at. I just didn't have the website and found a similiar pic of a F-100 with a stick and no clutch pedal. I'll post a link to the truck when i'm home. How does one shift if there's no clutch pedal? Just RPM the mesh and slide it in?

Sorry for the confusion. Yes, Stake-bed, not "stick bed." I'm obviously new at this.

The previous photo was of a similiar truck as I didn't have the photos of the truck with me. Here are a few shots of the 65'. The seller says it's one of 148 built (likely not something that can be proven) and has the following info: "has the original big 6 cylinder with factory automatic trans."

It looks like a six to me, but let me know what's real if you can tell.

I still don't get how an "automatic" can have a shifter. That is a stick shifter I see, right?

Actually ND can tell us just how many true platform stake units were made. They were low factory production.

Again, I am hoping for help with three things:

1.) Stake-bed...real or real crap?
2.) Trans...automatic from the seller, photo makes me wonder if they've ever driven it out of first gear if they think it's an auto.
3.) Engine, body etc. consistent with a 1965 F-100.

P.S. - Did Ford even make a '65 Stake body? Number Dummy I know you said before '66 one can't track the bed, but I assume it's possible they made one off the line? Seems hard to substantiate the "one of 148 made" line.

Any and all info appreciated.

6 cylinder= YES

Auto trans=Yes, someone converted it to a floor type aftermarket shifter, also notice there is no clutch pedal.

The shifter is forward. I believe that is in 'park' position. First would be all the way back.

http://www.docstoc.com/docs/46197424...965-Ford-Truck

This tell us that there were 148 stake F100 two wheel drive trucks built in 1965

The wheels are earlier artillery type, Not stock for the truck nor is the dual rear wheels.

There is not enough detail to see if the bed has ford script to verify if it is indeed ford or aftermarket.

Yeah, the no clutch was obvious. I'm just apparently slow, but you wouldn't need an aftermarket stick for an automatic, right? If the steering column shifter broke I'd get it, but how does the stick shift with no clutch? (Sorry if I'm an idiot, but. ..)
