Hey all.... I have a 2003 6.o Power stroke. Has 160k miles on it. I had the FICM rebuilt by Ed last year... No other work has been done...
Here is the issue:
On cold starts, every so often, the engine will crank and crank but not start. I can try it several times, then all of a sudden, she'll fire right up and run good with no other issues.
I don't even know where to start...any Suggestions?
Mike, we all run gauges that reads all the sensors and shows live time data as the engine is running. I use Scangauge2, it can be had at auto zone for $ 160. Might sound like a lot but an EGR valve in one of these things cost $300 bucks so you can play an expensive guessing game or get a set of gauges and buy the right parts.
wild guess would a HPOP issue
That's what worries me. It seems like when it's a cold start if I keep cranking on it, eventually it will fire up and run fine. On warm starts there is no issue. No trouble lights on when it's running, so I don't even know if it's throwing any codes at all. Could it be a leak in the high oil pressure system that is causing this? I do know that something is causing it not to get fuel correctly at startup...
Fal, I went and purchased a scangauge today. As I said before, I only have issues with cold start. I had my truck running and warmed up when I got the scangauge on it and set up, and here is what I got:
(readings are at idle and operating temp. Idle at about 580, temp around 170)
IPR is at 24.2%
ICP is at 645 psi
I do know that these have to do with the Hpop, but I'm not sure what is considered normal. Tomorrow morning, I'm going to go out and see if the issue is there again and see what I can come up with a cold truck.
Watch the ICP while its cranking and won't start, it needs to be over 500 before it will command the injectors to fire, also note the ICPV at KOEO (key on engine off )
Your in good hands here with mustang 309 along for the ride. When you post # do it like this. If trucks tuned return to stock, warm engine up to 190* or close. All accessories off. Post 3 sets of #s 1st KOEO, 2nd. Low idle ( truck runs on its own) 3rd High idle ( 2500 rpm)
If no one posts X -Gauges before I get home from work I'll do some research and get you a list. I'll also try to find the Pids showing what all the #s should be for all the sensors. You made a wise investment getting Gauges, it will pay for it's self the first time you diagnos your engine your self an save the $180 shop fee. Going to work now B BACK SOON

I had my FICM updated by Ed in March of '12. Got it back and mine did the same thing. This is no knock on Ed's work but the update changed something. I put up with it for about 18 months then my fun meter pegged. My problem was a very dirty IAT2 sensor. Easy to pull and clean. With 160K miles on your truck, do yourself a favor and pull and clean the IAT2 sensor. Let us know if it was dirty and if it fixed the problem.

IAT2 huh, I'm willing to learn something new. Probably needs cleaned anyway.
Bulrydr_1, the IAT2 sensor is Located behind the oil filter screwed into the Intake manifold. Use a 13/16 deep well socket to remove. Dip only the tip of the sensor in solvent. Don't get any solvent on the upper electrical part of the sensor. The sensor has 4 little windows in the tip, the top two windows has small wires in them be careful in this area so as not to damage the wires. The O ring on the sensor is reusable.
NCCPARTSMAN comes thru again , what an asset to this forum he is.
I'll look for the pids and get you a link.
OK mike found it and bumped it to the top. Open the thread titled Engine operating values. At the end of the first post there is a PDF file you can down load and print. It has all the numbers you need for all the sensors. This should keep you busy for a while see you next year. Tim
Thanks a ton guys! This morning I went out and it fired right up..no issues at all. I'm definitely going to pull the sensor tomorrow. Hopefully it's something stupid simple...I'll keep you posted
NCC and Fal...got a ton of the gauges programmed and downloading the pic now. Tomorrow I'll be cleaning the IAT2 sensor. Again, hopefully at simple fix. I think I feel better now that today everything was normal. It seems if it were the hoop itself, it would be all the time. I'm thinking maybe a dirty or a bad sensor...much cheaper and easier fix!
