In what ways does the water pump fail. I have heard that the impeller will crack. I think mine was leaking at the freeze plug and the vent hole. But it's not cracked.

Impeller cracking or coming loose is by far the most common that I've heard of. I think most if not all the aftermarkets are metal impellers so it should be easy to find and may have a "limited lifetime warranty".
I found one at checker that had a metal impeller and cost a grand total of $14. Its been on for about 60k and doing fine. My old one failed because it started leaking coolant from the hole under the the wheel.
thanks for the info. mine was leaking from there. I had a morning a couple weeks ago and it puked almost all the coolant out of the system. it was soaking wet all over the place. I couldn't find anywhere else it could have been leaking from.
