Hey fella's-- I'm getting ready to start my rebuild finally; So I started gathering all casting numbers I could to determine exactly what I have. Heads are c4ae-6090-c.
Block is c4ae-6105-a.
After doing some research on the web, I've discovered That the c stands for 1960 / 4=1964/ a=galaxie/e= engine department. The remaining digits are part numbers and engineering codes. At another web site I could only trace the numbers to a 427!!!!
Could this be true???? If it is what the heck do I do now???? My wish list and plans for mod's all center around it being 390.
Please advise.
THANKS
According to my book, the block is either a 427 top oiler, or a FT block. The heads look like they could either be 427 or 390 heads. They are not FT heads, since they would be C4TE if that were the case. So, if they came off the same engine, then yes, it is probably a 427. The only way to tell for sure with the block is to measure the bore. For the heads, measure the valves, and CC 'em and let us know. If the bore is 4.23, it's a 427 block.
Your are right in that it could be a g. However the c or g follows the part numbers and not the make code-c4ae-6090c(g). I'm using the info found at www.classicmustang.com/decoding_part_numbers.htm
please check it out and advise.
Thanks
Hmmm, I'm not sure what you're asking. The number on the head is a casting number, not a part number. The A means the Galaxie people designed the part but doesn't mean it was only used on Galaxies. That head was used on all full-size Fords and Mercurys w/ 352, 390. The C4 means the part started for the '64 model year but it continued thru the '65 model year too. In '66 they came out with a bunch of new heads.
So I guess the only true way and reliable way is to wait until I pull the heads and measur the bore as previously mentioned. I Looked up the application of the blosk and head numbers on http://pliverman.home.mindspring.com/index2.htm This is where I obtained classification of part numbers. I supose I'm just praying for it to be a 427!!
I think your block is a 390, all 427s had cross-bolt mains which you can see from the sides of the block.
Be careful of sites and books with application data, most of them have the same mistakes that have been passed on over the years. Even the Ford references have mistakes in them, gotta love it!
Ya know there is 3 bolt hole along the bottom that are empty- no bolts i was wondering why?? I figured they where for acsesory hook up's. I haven't looked at the other side yet but I will first thing in the morning. Surely somebody didn't leave the bolts out??? Then again they did just drop it and the tranny in place and weld cross member of both engine and transmissin in place along with perches. The mounts are definately car cause I bought a pair for a 390 truck set up and discovered the difference in the two. It also leans back toward the right side a little - evidence of the different perch set ups and mount locations. Still praying for the 427 though.
I have 2 left ended up with 4 overall - 2 went to a fella in NC.
No concrete plans yet for the two left - spent a lot of hours looking at them though with a beer in my hand. I'm putting a 71 F350 back together thought about using one in there but decided to put a 360 in - its going to be around the yard dump vehicle for the wife- have a 69 F-100 that has some potential maybe one will end up there.
Well Fella's I'm here to tell ya ---It's not a 427 but it sure was nice there for a while before it was confirmed. Thanks for the help. In the future I'll be able to tell a 427 easily whith the help I recieved here. Thanks again and I guess I'm back to a 390.
