Hello everyone, I hope everyone is having a great holiday season and had a good christmas.
That being said I am posting about the "type writer" noise. The reason why I started a new thread is because my truck (2013 King Ranch 250 6.7 ) which currently has 22900mi on her has developed a tick that has no real pattern to oil changes, driving style, towing/not towing, warm/cold, idle-2500 RPM. It has occurred during all these conditions. Full disclosure, my elevation daily changes between 5500 and 8000ft. This is unlike other threads that have said "it goes away." Looking for thoughts on the matter! Talked to ford and the "normal" verbiage started flowing. Don't get me wrong, I have put many miles on diesels in the past and this isn't my first diesel I know what sounds normal, but this seems slightly off. I want to nip it if it is something before it becomes something, of course just after my warranty closes out haha.
Thanks
It has a pattern, however it is after a few thousand miles post an oil change. The pattern matches RPM's (higher RPM = higher rate of ticking). The truck has undergone 2 oil changes, fuel filter changes etc and still no resolve. It continues all the same (total of 15,000 miles of ticking). All service, though I am knowledgeable and have done many services in the past on my other diesels, are done through FORD as to cover me with warranty etc.
-I dare to say I am noticing SLIGHT SLIGHT power decrease as well since the start of the tick.
All products used are Ford Motorcraft, Maintenance is done according to factory specification and intervals.
2ndStroke, Absolutely! Next time it occurs I will get a video, post to youtube, and paste a link to this thread. As of now that is the best I can do. I also have another thread for the "Service Advanced Track/Hill Decent Fault 6.7" that I mention a Ford engineer has been tasked to come look at my truck for a plaguing problem, if he mentions anything regarding the tick I will be happy to pass that along here as well.
Well lets hope its not a bad cam. I don't think it is, and to be honest the sounds in the video do not resemble the tick I am hearing. However i remember seeing that video a while ago. Thanks for the share 2ndStroke

If the tick has a pattern and doesn't occur right after an oil change, then I don't believe you have the type writer tick that Ford's TSB considers to be normal.
Thanks for that. I will bring it up tomorrow when I bring it in. They are documenting everything for the engineer (another issue: service advance track/hill decent fault) that is coming out to take a look at 3 months worth of computer problems. So this too with be documented and also will be brought to his attention. I am hoping I can find some answers from Ford for the persistent issues that have been plaguing the truck. I am going to straighten it out. Ill post any NEW findings, issues or recommendations from Ford here. Thanks all
I will defiantly keep everyone informed on my findings. If it does turn out to be the standard "type-writer" and there is no harm done, that will be great, if its more ominous then we will prepare for the possible preparations and actions. Either way you all will be the first to know. Bringing it in tomorrow (as requested from Ford) for other warranty work, and this will be mentioned. I will give an update as soon as I find something out.
That sounds like the type writer noise but that's more of a pop than a tick in my opinion.
Much louder than my engine's ticking noise with fresh oil.
Mine is more defined around 30 MPH driving along a fence row.
But just like the waste gate solenoid, some sound like a generator, some are fairly quiet, like mine.
Difficult to explain why some trucks don't have these noises, why some are quiet and why some are loud.
Mine has done that same tick since first oil change. Interested to know if anyone finds out that it is associated with a problem. I remember reading sometime back that mustangs were developing something similar after first oil change and some people said that ford used some type of additive when first filled up and that was the reason.
