TSB 99816 - 5w30 oil

Also the tsb only concerns motorcraft 5w30 which is a high quality semi synthetic only. From what I have read it costs ford more to make than it sells for,but was deemed worthwhile because of longevity and customer satisfaction reasons.Pretty much ford is subsidizing our oil to ensure we use a quality product.

I remember seeing this quite a few years ago and thought it was worth a look. FWIW it has always been recommended to use a lighter weight oil in colder climates or during winter months for those in the snowbelt, it eases cold starting and can improve fuel economy slightly. What I found was that it also introduced valvetrain noise that did not exist before on my flat tappet 5.8 so I quickly went back to 10w30 on this motor, but roller motors did not experience this problem. I did not use the Ford 5w30 for this experiment but I did use a high quality full synthetic(Mobil 1), and I even experimented with 0w30 in my Subaru for the winter since it regularly uses 5w30. The lighter weight oil delivered the expected results in everything except my 5.8 so it may not be right for every motor.

Thanks for posting this subford.
I found another TSB (0219) that supposedly supersedes 99816.
The final recommendation from Ford is to run 5w20 on these older engines.

Thanks for letting me know about your "experiment" with 5w30. I think I'll keep with the 10w30 originally recommended. I'll probably switch to a high-mileage 10w30 which has more ZDDP for our flat tappet 4.9 engines.
