Mobil 1 or motorcraft 5w-20

I have been using motorcraft synthetic blend 5w-20 in my 2010 Escape and 2011 6.2 F-250 since new but now that the dealer oil changes are over would going to Mobil 1 be a better choice for 7500 mile oil change intervals!

Well Mobil-1 may be a better choice, if your drive cycles are mostly severe service for both vehicles. The semi-synthetic 5W-20 SN/GF-5 recipe Motorcraft NOACK % evaporation is just above the 15% max value, according to published PQIA tests, so if either has been consuming some oil during the oci, the Mobil-1 having a lower NOACK % evaporation figure, may help in that situation & because of a higher quality base oil in its recipe, maybe also hold up better in a severe service drive cycle.

You could have a UOA = Used Oil Analysis performed on both brands, from both vehicles, to see which offer up lower wear metal figures & make a decision based on some testing.

The full synthetic Mobil 1 SHOULD be a better oil than the Motorcraft. If you read up on the PQIA website you can look at their test results for NOACK and additives. For 7500 miles a full synthetic may not be necessary though. The "conventional" and syn blend oils are of really high quality anymore. By their testing Pennzoil conventional 5w20 looks to be as good as some synthetics and the Pennzoil Ultra's NOACK is insanely good. As already recommended though a UOA is the best way to tell what oil is working best in your vehicle under your driving conditions.

I've done fine with the Motorcraft and would suggest using the dealer for oil changes through the length of your powertrain warranty if it is not really inconvenient. Face time with the service manager and service people can be very useful if you ever have an engine problem of any kind. Our Ford dealer has a quick drive-thru lane and it is barely more expensive than buying my own oil and filters. Your changes will be documented thru the powertrain warranty.

Good luck,
George

ps I switched a couple of my vehicles over to full syn oils for extended periods and noted no increase in gas mileage, oil consumption, etc. I have pretty much gone back to syn blend in my van and regular oil in my other car, and run changes out to about 6k miles as a good compromise. (I used to believe in 3k changes but with today's tight engines just don't think that is necessary.) I might be more inclined to use full syn if I were racing, towing heavy, or in engines that have a rep as being tough on oil. Costco has Mobil 1 for $26 for 6 quarts so that's where I'd usually buy it.
