Hard starting when hot.

This just started today and I finally got it home. So I didn't look at anything yet. On the way home from work I made a stop and coming out I tried to start it and it took a bit to start. I didn't pay much attention until the next stop when it would not restart at all. I tried about 5 times, then let it sit a bit and tried it. It started and I drove it home. The batteries are almost new and so is the starter. It turns over very fast. No check engine light. Starting cold was ok this morning and I just tried it after it sat for about 90 minutes and it was ok.

Any obvious things to check? The truck (F-350) is stock except for the air filter.
165K on it. I guess it could be a one time gremlin too. I have to work tomorrow afternoon and Sunday, and I am going about 50 miles each way so I would rather not get stuck.

When this happens , most of the time it is bad IPR o-rings.
It could be bad injector o-ring but don't go there yet

Is there a way to tell if they are bad?

For the IPR o-rings, pull it and take a look. For the injectors, either pull and replace all o-rings to see or look for an oil stained fuel filter as a hint.

My 250 has about 320K on it. All stock and no real problems, but when I changed the fuel filter last week, I thought it was a strange color. But it is still running ok. My 350 is the problem.

Is Ford ok for the o-rings or NAPA? If I get it started tomorrow and drive to work without stopping, then drive home without stopping will it run ok or will it just stop running eventually? What does a new IPR cost?

Ford is fine on O-rings. So is any retailer that offers Alliant branded o-rings.

A new IPR is in the $130 range (give or take $20). Not cheap. The rub is, they rarely "go bad," but rather get gunk in them and/or need new o-rings. There are write-ups on how to take them apart and clean them up. Really easy. The hardest part is the removal and replacment of the IPR. The job isn't complicated, but rather slightly challenging due to where you have to get your hands / tools in (like everything else on vehicles nowadays).

And speaking of IPR...make sure your tinnerman nut and spacer on the end of the IPR is tight and not loose or fallen off. If it very loose or missing (probably in the valley), that's your problem.

Have you had the CPS replaced on your F350? If not, it could be going out. It's a recall item, so free at the stealership.

I had a similar occurrence a few weeks ago. It did, however, set a P1212 code during a few long sessions of extended cranking. It turned out to be a bad IPR coil. The IPR always responded fine after start up and never failed when cold. I did notice a slight drop in ICP at low speeds and idle. After changing the coil only, hot start ups seem to be normal again. Apparently the coil was randomly breaking down when hot.

The IPR isn't bad if you have a really deep socket (1 1/8", I think), a short extension, and a universal joint. I have no problems when I use this setup.

Where is the IPR coil?
I have been running a black CPS from International for years now. It might be going out. Would that throw a code?

The CPS might not throw a code if bad. The IPR is located on the back of the HPOP, under the plastic Powerstroke cover, on the drivers side of it. It is low in the valley. It has a connector in the middle of it and a tin nut on the very back of it. The coil part is the big goldish color thing in the middle of it. If you take that tin nut of and unhook the electrical connector, it will slide off the shaft of the IPR.

In this picture, it is the one on the right.

Is the IPR coil part of the IPR or is it separate?

The coil comes in the box with the IPR (it's pictured above).

I just went out and looked at it. Everything seems in tact. I am heading out for o-rings. If I can't get any today, what are the chances of this driving very far? It started up this morning okay. My only other vehicle with 4 wheels that has insurance is my Expedition, and the brake line just started leaking last week and I did not have time to fix it yet. So I am down to my motorcycles. It might work for today, but tomorrow it will be colder and a slop storm coming.

Ok, Ford had the IPR, but no separate o-rings. So I am going to change the IPR and be done with it. Being out of work waiting to find o-rings will cost me even more.

Does it matter which way the tin nut goes? It there a torque to this stuff or just "tight"?
